Origins: A Community School for Expatriate Families

In 1969, a group of German and Swiss expatriate parents living in Hong Kong identified a gap: there was no school that could provide their children with the rigorous bilingual German-English education they had known in Europe. Their response was to found what would become German Swiss International School (GSIS).

The school opened in a rented house at 1 Barker Road, The Peak, with just 73 students. The setting was modest, but the academic ambition was not. From the outset, the founders insisted on dual-language instruction and a curriculum that would allow graduates to transition seamlessly into German, Swiss, British or international university systems.

Growth and the Move to Guildford Road

The school's reputation spread quickly through Hong Kong's expatriate community. By 1975, student numbers had grown sufficiently to warrant a purpose-built campus. The school introduced its first dedicated building on Guildford Road, The Peak — the site that remains the main campus today, serving Upper Primary and Secondary students and offering panoramic views of Victoria Harbour and the South China Sea.

A Two-Campus Structure

As the school continued to expand, a second campus was established at 162 Pok Fu Lam Road to accommodate the youngest students — Kindergarten through Lower Primary. This separation allows the Pok Fu Lam Campus to be purpose-designed for early childhood learning, with large outdoor playgrounds, indoor gymnasium space, treehouse classrooms and a rich library collection in German, English and Chinese. The Peak Campus, meanwhile, houses the full range of secondary facilities including a 20,000-volume library, indoor swimming pool, performing arts hall and specialist science and language laboratories.

International Recognition

Today GSIS holds two significant external validations of its educational quality:

• It is an IB World School, authorised to offer the full IB Diploma Programme
• It holds the "EXCELLENT" designation from the ZfA (Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen — Germany's Central Agency for Schools Abroad), making it the only school in Hong Kong to hold this distinction
