A Community Unlike Any Other

LPCUWC is a 100% boarding school. There are no day students. Every one of approximately 250 students lives on campus for two full years, creating an unusually intense and cohesive community that is central to the school's educational model.

The Demographics of the Community

The student body is intentionally balanced:

• ~50% Hong Kong local students — selected via the UWC Hong Kong National Committee
• ~50% international students — selected via UWC national committees in their home countries
• Students represent over 90 nationalities, making LPCUWC one of the most internationally diverse schools in Asia
• Each year approximately 120 new students join the two-year programme

This balance is by design. The UWC model believes that a meaningful encounter with difference requires genuine numerical parity — not a token international presence alongside a dominant local majority.

What Boarding Life Looks Like

All students live in purpose-built boarding houses ("College House") on the Ma On Shan campus, surrounded by lush hills overlooking Tolo Harbour. Meals are provided in a shared dining hall and are included in the all-inclusive fee. The campus includes:

The Impact of Living Together

The residential model is understood not just as a logistical arrangement but as a primary educational tool. Financial Access to the Community

Boarders who receive full scholarships pay nothing — the all-inclusive fee structure (covering tuition, boarding, meals, and IB examination fees) is either fully subsidized or on a sliding scale depending on family income. This policy means the community is not self-selecting by wealth, reinforcing the UWC value of celebrating difference in all its forms.

Academic Culture at LPCUWC

LPCUWC offers exclusively the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) — there are no other curricula or programmes. This singular focus creates a school culture deeply shaped by the demands and philosophy of the IB.

Marine Science, Environmental Systems, and Global Politics are particularly popular choices that reflect the school's mission-driven curriculum. The Extended Essay process — a 4,000-word independent research paper — is taken seriously and mentored carefully.

Admissions at LPCUWC

Admission to LPCUWC is unlike that of any conventional international school in Hong Kong. The process is structured, mission-driven, and deliberately designed to build a diverse community rather than simply recruit the highest-scoring students.

The UWC National Committee System

Students do not apply directly to LPCUWC. Instead:

• Hong Kong applicants apply through the UWC Hong Kong National Committee
• International applicants apply through their home country's UWC national committee
• Each year, approximately 50 places are reserved for Hong Kong students and 70 places for international students
• This ensures the 50/50 local-international balance is maintained by design

Selection Criteria

Selection is explicitly need-blind — financial situation has no bearing on whether a student is admitted. The criteria are:

• Academic promise (strong school reports and predicted grades)
• Leadership potential (demonstrated through extracurricular involvement and personal statement)
• Motivation and alignment with UWC values (commitment to intercultural understanding and service)

Required documents typically include current academic records (e.g. HKDSE predicted grades or O-level/GCSE scores), a recommendation letter, and a personal statement.

The Challenge Day

Shortlisted candidates are invited to a "Challenge Day" — a two-day selection workshop typically held in February. This is not a traditional exam; it is a multi-activity assessment that evaluates how applicants collaborate, communicate across difference, and respond to unfamiliar challenges. It reflects the UWC conviction that the best measure of future contribution to its community is not academic score alone but character in action.

No Application Fee

There is no application or registration fee — another structural expression of the school's commitment to equity and access.

Financial Aid Integration

Once admitted, students are assessed for financial need. Over 50% of the student body receives need-based scholarships or fee remission, and full scholarships covering tuition, boarding, meals, and IB exam fees are available. This means no qualified student is expected to decline a place purely for financial reasons.

The Founding of LPCUWC

The story of Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong is one of visionary philanthropy meeting an equally visionary educational movement.

Origins (1978–1987)

The concept of bringing a United World College to Hong Kong was first discussed in 1978, driven by individuals who had seen the UWC model in action through the Atlantic College in Wales (the first UWC, founded 1962) and other schools. Hong Kong was seen as an ideal location — a city at the intersection of East and West, a place where a truly international school could bridge cultures in a uniquely authentic way.

For nearly a decade, the project remained aspirational. The breakthrough came in 1987, when Li Sze-tsing (son of Hong Kong entrepreneur and philanthropist Li Po-chun) donated HK$100 million to fund the construction of a UWC campus in Hong Kong. The Li Po Chun Charitable Trust provided the founding capital, and land was secured at Ma On Shan in Sha Tin, a scenic area north of the city overlooking Tolo Harbour and backed by the Ma On Shan hills.

Opening and Early Years (1992–2000)

The campus opened in 1992 as the 8th United World College in the world. It was a purpose-built, fully residential campus designed specifically for the UWC model — with dormitories, a dining hall, academic buildings, a library, sports facilities, and an auditorium all integrated into a single green campus.

In 1994, LPCUWC joined Hong Kong's Direct Subsidy Scheme (DSS), a government programme that allows schools to set their own curricula and fees while receiving partial government funding. This gave the school the regulatory framework to operate as a Chinese-registered school while maintaining full independence in admissions and curriculum.

Recognition and Growth (2000–Present)

LPCUWC's academic reputation grew steadily through the 2000s. In 2007, the Wall Street Journal named LPCUWC among the top 50 schools globally — at the time one of only two non-US schools affiliated with the UWC movement to appear on the list, and the only one outside the United States.

The school became IB-authorized in December 1991 (ahead of opening), and has maintained its IB World School status continuously since. In 2017, three students in the graduating class achieved perfect IB scores of 45/45 — one of the most visible markers of academic excellence in international education.

Today LPCUWC is one of 18 UWC schools worldwide, and the only UWC in Hong Kong. It continues to be funded partly through government DSS grants and partly through fees and the Li Po Chun Charitable Trust, with over 50% of students receiving need-based financial support.
