GST Exemption on Core Fees Charged by Recognised Educational Institutions
Under a central tax notification effective July 1, 2017, services supplied by a qualifying educational institution to its own students, faculty and staff — including tuition and related student services from pre-school through higher-secondary level or equivalent — are exempt from Goods and Services Tax. A July 2022 clarification extended the exemption to admission, entrance/application, eligibility-certificate and migration-certificate fees charged by such institutions. The exemption applies to services the institution itself supplies; separately outsourced services, such as third-party catering, may be taxed differently. Eligibility depends on an institution meeting the notification's definition of an educational institution.

RTE Act Requires 25% Neighbourhood Quota for Weaker Sections at Eligible Private Schools
Since April 1, 2010, the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act requires eligible unaided non-minority schools and other specified-category schools to reserve at least 25% of Class I seats — and pre-school entry seats where pre-school is offered — for children from weaker sections and disadvantaged groups in the neighbourhood. This is a socio-economic and residence-based access obligation, not a restriction tied to a child's citizenship. Whether it applies to a specific international school depends on the school's legal status, recognition, minority status, and the rules of the state or union territory in which it operates.
