  • In force

6% service tax on school fees above MYR 60,000

Since 1 July 2025 a 6% service tax applies to the portion of private and international school fees that exceeds MYR 60,000 per student per academic year. Only the amount above the threshold is taxed. Malaysian citizens and holders of an OKU disability card are exempt, so it falls in practice on foreign students at higher-fee schools. Scholarships, education loans and fee exemptions are not taxed.

  • Announced

SPM Bahasa Melayu and History for Malaysian citizens

In January 2026 the government announced that Malaysian citizen students in international schools will be required to sit SPM Bahasa Melayu and History, with passing both linked to admission to public universities. As at May 2026 the technical implementation, assessment arrangements and start date were still being finalised and no first-affected cohort had been confirmed. The requirement applies to Malaysian students, not to foreign nationals.
