Core school tuition remains exempt from Swiss federal VAT
Under the Swiss Federal VAT Act, tuition fees for education recognised as schooling are exempt from VAT, including tuition charged by private schools. The exemption applies to the educational service itself, not to any nationality or residence status of the pupil, and is an exemption without input-tax credit. The Federal Tax Administration's consolidated English text of the VAT Act, shown as in force on 1 January 2025, confirms this treatment; this date reflects the status of the consolidated legal text rather than a newly introduced exemption. No nationwide fee-specific surcharge on tuition was identified in the material reviewed.

Zurich caps enrolment duration at foreign-curriculum private schools
In the canton of Zurich, private schools that are predominantly foreign-language and only partly follow the cantonal curriculum may enrol a child only if the family is temporarily resident in the canton, intends to move to a country using a foreign language of instruction, or the child is completing a schooling pathway begun in a non-German-speaking canton or country. Cantonal guidance defines temporary residence as under five years; pupils resident longer must generally switch to a school following Zurich's compulsory curriculum unless another listed condition applies. This is a residence- and pathway-based rule, not a nationality restriction, and has applied since the 2014/15 school year.
