• Classes 9-10 (ICSE): Affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, students sit the ICSE board exam at the end of Class 10. The curriculum covers English, History-Civics-Geography, Sciences, Mathematics, and a range of electives.
• Classes 11-12 (ISC or IB Diploma): Senior students choose between the Indian School Certificate (ISC) — offering 30+ subjects — and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), for which Doon has been an authorised IB World School since August 2006. The 2025 IB cohort averaged 36.1 points, significantly above the global mean.

A Full-Boarding World

The Doon School is, without qualification, a full boarding school. Every boy who gains a place at Doon — whether from Dehradun itself or from the farthest corner of India — lives, eats, studies, and sleeps within the Chandbagh campus. There are no day students. This total-immersion model is central to the school's philosophy: that character is formed not only in the classroom but in the daily friction and fellowship of communal life.

The Seven Houses

The school is divided into seven boarding houses, each with its own identity, colours, traditions, and competitive history:

Foot and Martyn houses serve as the initial home for boys entering in the lower forms, before they transition to one of the five main houses. Each house accommodates roughly 80 boys in rooms of two to eight, overseen by a Housemaster (a senior teacher) and a Dame (a pastoral welfare professional).

The rhythm of Doon life is structured but purposeful. Boys rise early, attend morning assembly, move through a full academic timetable, participate in afternoon sports or co-curricular activities, and reconvene as a house for the evening meal. The school operates a Wellness Centre staffed by resident medical professionals, providing day-to-day healthcare for all students. A Vision Born from Two Worlds

The Doon School's story begins with Satish Ranjan Das, a Calcutta lawyer who had witnessed the transformative power of British public school education and resolved to replicate — and improve upon — it for Indian boys. Inspired by schools such as Manchester Grammar and Eton College, Das spent years securing patronage and acquiring the Chandbagh estate on the edge of Dehradun, a city nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas.

In 1935, the school opened its doors under its first headmaster, Arthur Foot, who had himself been educated at Eton. Foot brought with him a philosophy centred on service, leadership, and the cultivation of rounded human beings rather than mere examination performers. This spirit — arguably ahead of its time — has defined the school's culture ever since.

Building an Institution

The early decades were marked by the challenge of educating boys destined to lead a nation on the cusp of independence. Among the school's earliest alumni cohorts were students who would go on to shape independent India — most famously, Rajiv Gandhi, who served as Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989.

From its founding class of a handful of boys, the school grew steadily through the mid-twentieth century. The Chandbagh campus — spanning approximately 70 acres (280,000 m²) — was developed over generations with boarding houses, playing fields, laboratories, an indoor pool, and eventually a world-class wellness centre and arts facilities.

Academic Evolution

While the school originally operated under its own proprietary curriculum, it subsequently affiliated with the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), offering the ICSE examination at Class 10 and the ISC at Class 12. In 2006, The Doon School became an IB World School, adding the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme as an alternative to ISC for senior students — a move that cemented its standing as an internationally oriented institution.

A Living Legacy

Today, The Doon School houses approximately 600 boys aged 12 to 18 in seven boarding houses — Tata, Oberoi, Hyderabad, Kashmir, Jaipur, Foot, and Martyn — each presided over by a Housemaster and a Dame. Its faculty of roughly 70 teachers maintain an extraordinary 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio.

A Single Gateway

Unlike many elite schools that offer rolling admissions or multiple entry points, The Doon School admits new students at only two grade levels: Class VII and Class VIII. Boys typically sit for entry at ages 11-13. There is no lateral entry into Classes 9-12.

The sole route to a place at Doon is the Doon School Scholarship Examination (DSSE) — an annual, nationally administered assessment that simultaneously serves as the entrance exam and the scholarship selection mechanism.

How the DSSE Works

The DSSE is a computer-based, multiple-choice test administered online, covering three subjects:

• English — reading comprehension, language skills, essay writing
• Mathematics — numerical reasoning and problem-solving
• Science — integrated natural science

Candidates who qualify through the written stage are invited for a personal interview conducted in English, which assesses intellectual curiosity, communication skills, and overall potential beyond the written scores.

Scholarships Built Into the Process

A distinctive feature of the DSSE is that the best-performing candidates are automatically considered for scholarships — partial or full fee waivers — without a separate application. The school reviews both examination performance and family financial circumstances when determining scholarship awards.
