Woodstock School was founded in 1854 by American missionaries in Landour, Mussoorie—a hill station nestled at around 2,000 metres above sea level in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas. This makes it one of the oldest continuously operating international schools not only in India, but in all of Asia.

The school was established primarily to serve the children of expatriate missionaries and colonial-era families, but its student body has grown and diversified enormously over the decades. The Win Mumby Gymnasium provides an indoor arena for basketball and volleyball that is large enough to host national tournaments, including Woodstock's own annual Win Mumby Basketball Tournament. Outdoor sports available on campus include cricket, football, cross-country running, squash, rock climbing and ultimate frisbee.

A School Reinventing Its Academic Identity

Woodstock School has for decades been known as an IB World School, offering both the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). It received IB authorization in May 2019. However, the school is now undergoing a significant curriculum transition, moving towards a proprietary Woodstock Diploma that incorporates Cambridge IGCSE qualifications and Advanced Placement (AP) courses in the senior years.

While Woodstock does not publish detailed university placement statistics, it describes its graduates as attending "top colleges and universities around the world." Its American accreditation (MSA-CESS since 1959) and long-standing IB authorization have historically supported applications to universities across the US, UK, India and beyond.

ESL and Learning Support

A full English as an Additional Language (ESL/EAL) programme supports non-native English speakers in accessing the curriculum. A dedicated Learning Support department provides additional assistance to students with diverse learning needs.

English Language Requirements

All instruction at Woodstock is in English, and a working level of English proficiency is expected. However, the school operates a full ESL (English as an Additional Language) programme for students who are not yet fully proficient, making it accessible to a wider range of international applicants than many purely English-medium schools.

Financial Aid: A Genuine Commitment

One of Woodstock's most distinctive admissions features is the scale of its financial aid programme. The school states that it provides between USD 1 million and USD 1.5 million in financial aid every year to qualified students. This is a significant commitment for a school of approximately 500 students and reflects Woodstock's foundational mission to enrol talented students regardless of financial background.

Fees for 2023–24 range from INR 1,805,000 per year (Grades 6–8) to INR 2,005,000 per year (Grades 11–12), with boarding fully included. A non-refundable establishment fee of INR 400,000 and a refundable security deposit of INR 390,000 are also required.
