    VAT exemption for qualifying schools' academic-education fees takes effect

    From January 1, 2026, China's Value-Added Tax Law exempts qualifying schools' academic-education services from VAT. A Ministry of Finance and State Taxation Administration notice specifies the exemption covers approved tuition, accommodation, textbooks, workbooks, examination-registration fees, and canteen charges for students enrolled within an institution's approved admissions plan. It applies to schools approved by prefecture-level-or-higher authorities that provide nationally recognised academic education, including qualifying private schools, but not vocational-training providers whose qualifications lack national recognition. Sponsorship payments and school-selection payments are expressly excluded. The measure is in force as of its stated effective date.
