Who Can Apply

Unlike many international schools in Beijing that restrict enrolment to non-Chinese passport holders, Keystone Academy is open to both Chinese nationals and foreign nationals. This makes it one of a small number of bilingual private schools in China that genuinely bridges the local and international communities.

Approximately 90% of students hold Chinese nationality; around 10% are international students from some 25 nationalities.

Entry Points and Timing

Keystone accepts applications year-round but prioritises entry at Grade 1 (beginning of primary) and Grade 7 (beginning of middle school). These entry cohorts are larger and more planned; applications for other grades are considered only when space permits.

Key deadline: Applications for the following academic year must be submitted by June 15 (e.g. June 15, 2026 for the 2026–27 school year). Applications received after this date are not considered, regardless of space.

The Application Process

1. Online application submitted via the Keystone admissions portal
2. School records and teacher recommendations uploaded (for students beyond Grade 1)
3. Student interview/assessment — evaluates academic readiness and fit for the bilingual program
4. Parent interview — assesses family alignment with Keystone's values and bilingual commitment
5. Admissions decision communicated after all steps are complete

Language Requirements

Because Keystone delivers genuine bilingual instruction from the start, students entering after Grade 1 must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in both English and Chinese to access the curriculum. There is no standardised test score requirement published; rather, the student assessment serves as the proficiency evaluation. Families with limited Chinese or English are advised to contact the admissions office to discuss readiness.

Boarding Requirement

All students from Grade 9 onward are required to board on campus. Families considering Keystone for secondary enrolment should factor this into their decision — it is a non-negotiable feature of the high school programme.

Financial Considerations

Tuition for 2025–26 ranges from ¥289,800 (Primary) to ¥323,950 (Grades 11–12), with an additional boarding and meal fee of ¥110,250 for residential students. A refundable enrollment deposit (equivalent to one year's tuition) and a non-refundable registration fee are also required. Limited need-based and merit financial aid is available by application through the admissions office.

Academic Structure

Keystone Academy operates a coherent three-stage academic progression:

• Foundation Year to Grade 5 (Primary): Inquiry-based learning using the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), taught bilingually with a class teacher plus assistant; maximum class size 18.
• Grades 6–10 (Middle School): IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), authorized April 2017, integrating Chinese cultural content throughout.
• Grades 11–12 (High School): IB Diploma Programme (DP), authorized April 2016, with a full range of Higher and Standard Level subjects across all six groups, plus AP courses.

The school also runs a distinctive Chinese Thread — a cross-curricular strand ensuring Chinese language, literature, history, and culture are woven into every year of study, not siloed into a single subject.

IB Results: Consistently Above World Average

Keystone's IB outcomes are among the strongest at any school in China:

Class of 2023 (108 candidates):

The bilingual diploma — awarded to students who complete two languages at A Level — is particularly notable. Fewer than 10% of IB students globally earn it; at Keystone, it is the norm.

Class Size and Teacher Ratio

With approximately 1,670 students and ~500 faculty, the school maintains an official student-to-teacher ratio of 1:8. Middle and high school classes are capped at 18 students; primary classes have both a lead teacher and a classroom assistant, ensuring highly personalised instruction.

Keystone Academy was founded on a single bold premise: that the best of Chinese and Western educational traditions need not be in tension — they can be fused into something genuinely new. The school describes itself as "a new model of education in China," and its official mission captures this ambition directly:

"Keystone Academy is a new model of education in China. It blends distinctive traditions in eastern, western, and global education, creating a new world school with a liberal arts program that is academically outstanding."

Boarding as a Feature, Not a Footnote

At most schools, boarding is an add-on for students who live far away. At Keystone Academy, residential life is a deliberate pedagogical choice. The school requires all students from Grade 9 onward to board on campus, treating the dormitory as an extension of the classroom.

Boarding is optional for Grades 7–8, giving younger secondary students the chance to experience communal living before it becomes compulsory. By Grade 9, every student is a boarder — creating a level of shared experience and community cohesion rare in Chinese international school settings.

The 'Dorm Family' Model

Keystone structures its residential community around house groups, colloquially called 'dorm families.' Each house:

• Is supervised by dedicated house parents who live on campus
• Has assigned Resident Advisors (student leaders in senior years)
• Holds regular house meetings and community-building activities
• Functions as a student's primary support network outside the classroom

This model is borrowed from the great British and American boarding school traditions but adapted for a predominantly Chinese student body navigating a bilingual, bicultural identity.

Dormitory rooms are two-person with en-suite bathrooms — a premium standard for school boarding in China. Faculty apartments are located on campus, ensuring adult presence at all hours. The dining commons serves all meals for boarding students, and the campus includes a fitness centre, swimming pool, and outdoor spaces designed for both structured activity and unstructured relaxation.

The Keystone Activities Program (KAP)

Co-curricular life at Keystone is formalised into the Keystone Activities Program (KAP), which currently offers more than 200 activities each academic year. Participation is a core expectation, not an optional extra, and the majority of activities are included in tuition fees with no additional charge.

A distinguishing feature of KAP is that students can propose and found new clubs each year. This entrepreneurial dimension means the activity offering evolves with each cohort's interests, and student leaders gain real experience in planning, budgeting, and managing a community organisation.

Chinese Cultural Integration

KAP is one of the primary vehicles through which Keystone delivers on its promise of genuine Chinese cultural education. Lion Dance, calligraphy, Chinese orchestra, martial arts, and Lunar New Year concerts are not peripheral events — they are central, recurring, and well-attended. The annual KAP Spring Festival Concert, held in the Performing Arts Centre, brings together Chinese orchestra, dance, martial arts, and calligraphy groups in a celebration that involves students, parents, and staff alike.

Schedule & Access

Most KAP activities run after school hours (with school buses departing at approximately 4:30 pm for day students). Students sign up in advance each term; popular activities may have waiting lists. The programme is designed to accommodate both boarding and day students.
