UWC Changshu China was established with one overriding conviction: "Education is a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future." This is not merely a slogan—it shapes every dimension of life at the school, from how classes are structured to who is admitted and how community life is organised.

The school is the first United World College in mainland China, opened in 2015 as the 15th member of the global UWC movement. Unlike many international schools that primarily serve expatriate families, UWC Changshu operates through a mission-driven selection system in which the vast majority of students are chosen by UWC national committees in their home countries, representing their nation as ambassadors to an international community.

ZhiXing: Learning Through Doing

One of the most distinctive features of UWC Changshu's philosophy is the ZhiXing (知行) Programme, whose name is drawn from the classical Chinese principle that knowledge and action are inseparable. Through ZhiXing, students participate in immersive experiences in Chinese culture, community engagement, and sustainability projects. This might include visits to local villages, collaboration with Chinese NGOs, cultural arts workshops, or environmental fieldwork around Kun Cheng Lake.

This grounding in Chinese culture is intentional: UWC Changshu believes that truly international education cannot ignore the context in which it operates. Students who come from 90+ countries gain an authentic exposure to Chinese society that enriches their global perspective in ways that no classroom-only curriculum could achieve.

A Boarding Community Built for Encounter

All students live on campus in a fully residential environment. The school believes that living together is itself a form of education—navigating differences in language, culture, habit, and worldview on a daily basis is the most powerful teacher of international understanding. Dormitory life, communal dining, house teams, and shared outdoor spaces are all designed to maximise cross-cultural encounter and personal growth.

The philosophy is ultimately transformative: UWC Changshu aims to send graduates into the world not just with IB qualifications, but with a deep commitment to making a positive difference—as activists, diplomats, entrepreneurs, scientists, or artists who carry the UWC values throughout their careers.

From a Personal Mission to a National First

The story of UWC Changshu China is inseparable from the story of its founder, Mark Jiapeng Wang, a graduate of the Red Cross Nordic UWC (RCNUWC) in Norway. Wang's UWC experience transformed his worldview, and upon graduation he set himself a singular goal: to bring a United World College to mainland China.

This was no small ambition. For 15 years, Wang navigated the complex intersection of Chinese educational policy, international institutional requirements, local government relationships, and philanthropic fundraising. The process required extraordinary persistence, as previous attempts by others to establish UWC institutions in China had not resulted in a full campus member school.

Opening in 2015: The 15th UWC Worldwide

In 2015, Wang's efforts bore fruit: UWC Changshu China officially opened, becoming:

• The first United World College in mainland China
• The 15th UWC school in the world
• Located in Changshu, Jiangsu Province, beside the scenic Kun Cheng Lake

The campus itself was a statement of architectural ambition. Designed by a disciple of the legendary architect I.M. Pei, the buildings blended traditional Jiangnan water-town aesthetics—whitewashed walls, dark roof tiles, garden courtyards, and waterways—with modern educational facilities. The result was a campus that felt distinctly Chinese while being functionally world-class.

2018: The Yushan Academy Completed

A major milestone came in September 2018, when the Yushan Academy (虞山书院) was completed within the UWC Changshu campus. This 3,800 square metre building, constructed in the style of a classical Jiangnan private academy, was formally named by the Changshu municipal government and serves as the home of the school's Chinese culture programme and the Yushan Design Innovation Centre.

The Academy's name references the historic Yushan Academy that once stood in Changshu during the Ming Dynasty—a deliberate link to Chinese scholarly tradition and the city's cultural heritage.

Growth into a Global Community

Since its founding, UWC Changshu has grown rapidly. By 2019, it enrolled 580 students from over 100 countries and regions. By 2026, the community had expanded to over 620 students from 90+ countries. The school has maintained its commitment to need-based scholarships, ensuring that admission is determined by potential and values rather than financial means.

Today, UWC Changshu stands as one of the most selective international schools in Asia, with approximately 18,000 annual applicants competing for a graduating class of around 220 students per year.

An Admissions Process Unlike Any Other

UWC Changshu China's admissions process is among the most distinctive—and most competitive—of any secondary school in the world. With approximately 18,000 applicants competing for a cohort of around 220 students per year, the overall acceptance rate is approximately 5%. Yet this selectivity is not about grades or test scores; it is about character, values, and potential.

How the Process Works

The selection process operates in two main stages:

Stage 1 – Written Application

• Four personal essays exploring values, experiences, and motivations
• Answers to six personal questions
• Academic transcripts and school reports
• No TOEFL, IELTS, or other standardised language tests required at this stage

Stage 2 – Selection Day (for shortlisted candidates)

• Written tests in three subjects: Chinese language, Mathematics (in English), and English
• Individual student interview conducted in English
• Group activities and collaborative tasks

The absence of standardised testing requirements is intentional. UWC Changshu, like other UWC schools, believes that test scores are a poor proxy for the qualities that make a transformative UWC student: intellectual curiosity, empathy, leadership, resilience, and commitment to service.

The Role of UWC National Committees

The vast majority of students are selected not directly by the school, but through UWC national committees in their home countries. These committees apply UWC's global selection criteria, ensuring that students are chosen as representatives of their nation's diversity—not just its academic elite. This system means that students from very different socioeconomic, cultural, and educational backgrounds arrive at Changshu on an equal footing.

Need-Based Scholarships as a Pillar of Access

A cornerstone of the admissions philosophy is the school's need-based scholarship programme. UWC Changshu actively encourages applications from students from disadvantaged backgrounds and works to ensure that up to 100% of tuition fees can be covered by scholarship support for those who qualify. Financial need is never a barrier to admission for a qualified candidate.

Timeline and Notification

For the 2025 intake, the online application window opened in mid-August 2024. Selection Days are typically held in autumn (September–October). Successful candidates are notified approximately 6–10 weeks after their Selection Day.

The combination of extreme selectivity, values-based assessment, and need-blind scholarship support makes UWC Changshu's admissions culture genuinely unusual in the international school landscape.

The IB Diploma Programme

UWC Changshu China offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) as its sole academic qualification, reflecting the school's commitment to a truly international curriculum. The school is structured as follows:

• Grade 10 (Foundation/Pre-IB year): Approximately 140 students per cohort; a one-year preparation year that introduces IB study skills, UWC values, and the ZhiXing experiential programme.
• Grade 11 (IB Year 1, DP1): Approximately 220 students.
• Grade 12 (IB Year 2, DP2): Approximately 220 students.

Students select six subjects across the IB's six subject groups, with options at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL):

All students also complete the IB's core requirements: Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).

Average Class Size and Learning Environment

With an average class size of approximately 20 students, UWC Changshu maintains the small-group environment that allows for Socratic discussion, individual teacher attention, and the kind of intellectual depth that IB demands. The STEM building's ten science laboratories ensure that practical work is central to science education, not an afterthought.

Setting: Kun Cheng Lake and the Jiangnan Landscape

UWC Changshu China's campus occupies approximately 24 acres (about 98,000 m²) beside Kun Cheng Lake in Changshu, Jiangsu Province. The location is intentional: the city of Changshu is a historic cultural centre in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, offering students an authentic window into Chinese history, art, and daily life.

The campus was designed by a disciple of I.M. Pei in a style that evokes traditional Jiangnan water-town architecture—whitewashed walls, dark-tiled roofs, pavilions, waterways, and garden courtyards—while incorporating the spatial requirements of a modern international school. The result is a campus that feels at once ancient and contemporary, distinctly Chinese and internationally oriented.

World-Class Academic Facilities

• STEM Building: Ten dedicated science laboratories covering physics, chemistry, and biology, supporting the IB science curriculum at both Standard and Higher Level.
• Library: A two-storey library with 4,000+ physical volumes, six private study rooms, and access to electronic journals, School Library databases, Press Reader, and CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure).

• Head of House teachers provide pastoral support within the house system, ensuring that every student has a dedicated adult mentor in their residential community.

The Yushan Academy: A Campus Within a Campus

Opened in September 2018, the Yushan Academy (虞山书院) is named after a historic Ming Dynasty academy that once stood in Changshu. Its classical Jiangnan architecture—courtyards, water features, pavilions—provides a contemplative counterpoint to the more modern academic buildings, and serves as the spiritual heart of the school's Chinese culture and ZhiXing programmes.
