A School Born from Diplomacy and Mission

Shanghai American School (SAS) traces its origins to September 17, 1912, when it opened its doors on North Sichuan Road in Shanghai's Hongkou district. Founded with the support of the US Consulate and missionary organizations to serve the growing expatriate community, the school began with just 38 day and boarding students.

For nearly four decades, SAS grew alongside Shanghai's cosmopolitan international community, becoming a cornerstone of expatriate life in the city. However, the sweeping political changes of the late 1940s and early 1950s — culminating in the establishment of the People's Republic of China — forced the school to suspend operations. After efforts to continue proved untenable, SAS closed its doors, entering what would be a 30-year hiatus.

Reestablishment and Renewal

The normalization of US–China diplomatic relations under Nixon and Carter created the conditions for SAS's rebirth. In 1980, the school reopened, initially serving the small but growing community of American and international professionals returning to China as it opened up to the world.
