VAT exemption on fees at South African Schools Act–registered schools
From 1 January 2026, supplies made by schools registered under the South African Schools Act are exempt from VAT, per South African Revenue Service (SARS) guidance. Affected schools may not charge VAT on qualifying supplies, including tuition and related fees, and may no longer deduct input VAT on those supplies. A narrow exception applies to schools conducting qualifying welfare activities under a Commissioner's ruling. This measure is legislated and in force, not merely proposed. A related 'exit VAT' liability on previously claimed input VAT becomes payable from schools (not charged to families) starting 1 January 2027, typically over 12 monthly instalments.
