Origins and Early Growth

The British School of Kuwait (BSK) has its roots in a modest nursery called The Sunshine School, established in 1978 by Vera and Sadiq Al-Mutawa. What began as a small early-years setting quickly gained a reputation for quality and grew steadily in the years that followed.

Surviving the Gulf War

The school's trajectory was dramatically interrupted by the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 1990 and the subsequent Gulf War. Like much of Kuwait's infrastructure, the school faced severe disruption. However, BSK endured, and by 1992 — the year after Kuwait's liberation — the school had recovered to educate approximately 550 children, a testament to the community's resilience and demand for quality British education.

A New Home and a New Name

In 1993, the school made a pivotal move to its current location in the residential Salwa district of Kuwait City. This relocation coincided with a formal re-launch under the name The British School of Kuwait, reflecting the school's expanded scope and ambition. At re-opening, enrollment had grown to around 900 students, signalling the school's emergence as a significant educational institution in the region.

Expansion and Global Affiliation

Over the following decades, BSK steadily expanded its phase coverage to become a full through-school, serving students from Reception (age 4) through Year 13 (age 18). The school joined the Nord Anglia Education group, one of the world's leading premium international school organisations, unlocking partnerships with globally renowned institutions such as The Juilliard School and MIT, and providing access to a worldwide network of peer schools.

Today

BSK now accommodates approximately 3,500 students from over 75 nationalities across a purpose-built, 25,000 sq. m campus in Salwa. Accredited by British Schools Overseas (BSO), fully licensed by the Kuwait Ministry of Education, and a member of the British Schools in the Middle East (BSME) network, BSK stands as one of Kuwait's most respected international schools — proud of over 45 years of excellence and innovation.

BSK follows the English National Curriculum from Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception) through to Sixth Form (Years 12–13). The curriculum progresses through Key Stages 1–3, culminating in Cambridge IGCSE qualifications (with approximately 25 subject options) and AS/A Level qualifications (with 16–18 subject choices). The school also offers the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), providing students with a university-style independent research experience.

In compliance with Kuwait Ministry of Education requirements, Arabic Language and Islamic Studies are integrated throughout the school, alongside foreign language options in French and German.

BSK occupies a purpose-built, 25,000 sq. m campus in Salwa, a peaceful residential neighbourhood in Kuwait City. The campus is self-contained and designed to provide a safe, focused environment for learning and co-curricular activity. Its coordinates — 29.3010°N, 48.0640°E — place it conveniently within the city, approximately 20 km from Kuwait International Airport.

Academic and Science Facilities

The campus houses multiple fully-equipped science laboratories serving IGCSE and A Level science students, as well as a comprehensive library and learning resource centre. All classrooms are fitted with interactive whiteboards, and campus-wide Wi-Fi supports a technology-enhanced learning environment. From Year 6 upwards, students are issued iPads or laptops to support digital learning.

STEAM and Design

A dedicated STEAM maker space equipped with 3D printers, robotics kits and design technology workstations gives students hands-on experience with engineering and innovation.
