Origins in Porto's International Community

In the mid-1980s, Porto was experiencing an influx of foreign business executives, diplomats, and internationally mobile professionals whose children needed schooling that would be recognised back home or in their next posting. No such institution existed in northern Portugal. The Luso-International Foundation stepped in, establishing CLIP — Colégio Luso-Internacional do Porto — in 1988, initially in renovated premises that bore little resemblance to the modern campus students enjoy today.

The school opened its doors to a small cohort and grew steadily through the 1990s. By 1993 enrolment stood at approximately 140 students; by 2001 that figure had risen to 376, reflecting Porto's growing attractiveness as a European business hub and the school's strengthening academic reputation.

The pivotal moment in CLIP's physical development came in 2003, when the school moved to its current purpose-built campus in the Aldoar district of Porto. Academic credibility was formalised in 2014 when CLIP achieved accreditation from the Council of International Schools (CIS), one of the most rigorous quality marks in international education. At that point enrolment had reached 634; by 2016 it had climbed to approximately 874, and by 2019 the school surpassed 1,200 students — a milestone that prompted a formal rebranding to 'CLIP – Oporto International School' to reflect its international identity more explicitly.

The performing arts are well-served by a 200-seat auditorium and two 100-seat amphitheatres, enabling regular concerts, drama productions, and whole-school assemblies. The Music Centre and drama facilities support the school's active performing arts programme.

Dining is provided through two on-site canteens supported by a full industrial kitchen, ensuring that students across all year groups have access to hot meals. An on-site café serves the wider school community. The campus also houses a CLIP Shop for uniform and supplies, administration offices, teacher workrooms, and landscaped courtyards that provide outdoor social space.

Situated in Aldoar, a residential district of Porto, the campus is accessible by city bus (routes 501 and 205) and is approximately 12 minutes' walk from Parque da Cidade Metro station on Line A. Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is 20–30 minutes by car, making the school accessible for newly arriving international families.
