YK Pao School was founded in 2007 by the family of Sir Yue-Kong Pao (包玉刚), the Ningbo-born entrepreneur who built the world's largest private shipping fleet and became one of Hong Kong's most celebrated philanthropists. After his death in 1991, his daughters Anna Sohmen Pao and Tan Fuyun, together with grandson Philip Pao Sohmen, resolved to create an institution that would embody his twin commitments: deep rootedness in Chinese culture and language, and openness to the world.

The school opened in September 2007 in temporary premises, with its founding cohort of roughly 100 students.

The Selection Process

Admissions follow a clear two-round structure:

Round 1 — Written Examinations

• Chinese Language (语文)
• Mathematics (数学)

• Each paper is approximately one hour in length

Round 2 — Interview (for shortlisted candidates)

• Conducted in both Chinese and English

YK Pao School operates across three campuses in Shanghai, each purpose-designed for its student age group. While students move between campuses as they progress through year groups, the school maintains a coherent community culture across all three sites through shared values, joint events and a unified academic philosophy.

Wuding Primary Campus (Years 1–5)

Located at No. 20, Lane 1251, Wuding West Road, Changning District, the Wuding Campus occupies 7,108 m² in one of Shanghai's most sought-after residential neighbourhoods.

Atmosphere: Urban, intimate and stimulating. The compact footprint is offset by creative use of vertical space, including:

• Rooftop gardens and outdoor play areas
• A 600-seat auditorium for whole-school events
• An international library with 20,000+ volumes
• Specialist art studios, ceramics room and kiln
• Multiple music rooms with pianos, percussion practice rooms and an ensemble studio

The primary campus is within 10 minutes' walk of Jiangsu Road Metro Station (Line 2), making it easily accessible for central Shanghai families.

Hongqiao Middle School Campus (Years 6–8)

Located at 2206 Hongqiao Road, Changning District, the Hongqiao Campus serves the middle school years in a dedicated facility close to the Hongqiao transport hub.

Atmosphere: Transitional — balancing the nurturing environment of primary school with the increasing independence expected at secondary level. Facilities include science laboratories, art and design studios and a sports hall.

The nearest Metro station (Longxi Road, Line 10) is immediately adjacent.

Songjiang High School Campus (Years 9–12)

The Songjiang Campus is the flagship site: a 45,000 m² purpose-built secondary and boarding campus at No. 1800, Lane 900, Xinsongjiang Road, Songjiang District.

Atmosphere: Collegiate and residential. The large campus creates space for:

• Full-size athletics track and sports fields
• Indoor gymnasium and performance arts facilities
• State-of-the-art science laboratories
• Separate boarding houses for boys and girls (5-day weekly boarding, Monday to Friday)
• Dining hall, library and counselling services

The campus is approximately 30 minutes from Hongqiao Railway Station by car. A school bus service connects it to central Shanghai residential areas. The boarding programme is available from Year 9 (age 14) through Year 12 (age 18), with students returning home at weekends.
