Bodwell High School's educational philosophy centres on the belief that schools must prepare students not just for today's world, but for a rapidly evolving future. Encapsulated in its motto "Education for a Changing World", the school's approach integrates academic excellence with character formation, community belonging, and global awareness.

The Mission Statement

Bodwell's official mission is: "To provide a culturally diverse environment where local, Canadian, and international boarding and day students learn together, becoming active learners and well-rounded citizens who contribute positively to the world."

This mission is operationalised through several distinct practices. On arrival, every student is assigned to one of six houses, intentionally mixing nationalities to build cross-cultural understanding and to "learn about values needed to live together." The house system is more than a social structure — it is a vehicle for character education.

Balancing Tradition with Innovation

The pedagogical approach balances inquiry-based learning — as expected of an IB World School — with structured direct instruction. The academic program is designed so that students "find their unique style" through study groups, individual tutoring, and 70+ study hall sessions per year. This dual approach recognises that international students, many arriving with varying educational backgrounds, benefit from both structured scaffolding and independent intellectual exploration.

Founders' Vision

The philosophy traces directly to founder Paul Yuen's personal conviction. In 1991, Yuen was motivated by meeting young international students who were isolated and lacked community support. His vision was to create a school where academic opportunity was paired with genuine care — "care, community and activities" — a vision that remains central to Bodwell's identity over three decades later.

The Origins of Bodwell High School

Bodwell High School was established in 1991 by educator Paul Yuen and his wife Cathy Lee in Vancouver's Kitsilano neighbourhood. The founding story is a compelling blend of personal mission, rapid grassroots growth, and eventual institutional maturity.

The Founding Vision

Paul Yuen's motivation was deeply personal. In 1990, he encountered young international students studying in Canada who felt isolated, disconnected from community, and unsupported outside the classroom. He observed that academic instruction alone was insufficient — students needed care, community, and activities to thrive in a foreign country far from their families.

"In 1990, I met young [students]...still back home," Yuen later recalled, describing the moment that crystallised his vision to create a school that would combine academic excellence with genuine pastoral care for international youth.

Rapid Early Growth

Bodwell opened with just 6 students in its first semester. Within 4 months, enrolment had grown to 42 students — a remarkable early validation of the school's concept. This rapid growth created an immediate need for expanded facilities and led Yuen to acquire land for a dedicated campus.

Relocation to North Vancouver

The school subsequently relocated from Kitsilano to its current waterfront campus at 955 Harbourside Drive, North Vancouver. The acquisition of purpose-built premises on the Burrard Inlet waterfront transformed Bodwell from a small private school into a full-service boarding and day institution capable of housing hundreds of students on site.

Growth to the Present

Over more than three decades, Bodwell has grown to approximately 550 students from over 40 countries. Key institutional milestones include:

• Registration with the BC Ministry of Education as an accredited independent school
• Authorisation as an IB World School for the Middle Years Programme
• Recognition as High School of the Year by Study Travel Magazine (2014 and 2015)
• Class of 2025: 155 graduates, 522 university offers, $4.17M+ in scholarships

The school remains a family-operated private institution, maintaining the founder's original ethos of combining academic rigour with community care for international students.

A Three-Programme Academic Structure

Bodwell High School offers a carefully sequenced academic journey across Grades 8–12 that combines three internationally recognised frameworks:

Grades 8–10: IB Middle Years Programme (MYP)

The lower years follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, which emphasises interdisciplinary thinking, inquiry, and the development of internationally minded students. MYP subjects include:

The MYP's emphasis on Approaches to Learning (ATL skills) — research, communication, self-management, social and thinking skills — provides a strong intellectual foundation before students enter the senior programme.

Grades 11–12: BC Dogwood Diploma with Advanced Placement

In the senior years, Bodwell transitions students to the British Columbia Dogwood Diploma, the official provincial graduation credential recognised by universities worldwide. Layered on top are Advanced Placement (AP) courses — at least 8 AP subjects — allowing academically motivated students to pursue university-level content and earn potential college credits.

The BC Dogwood + AP combination is particularly strategic for Bodwell's international student body, as it provides:

• Global university recognition — BC credentials are accepted at Canadian, US, UK, Australian, and other institutions
• AP credentials — valued by US universities and offering credit transfer opportunities
• Personalised academic planning — supported by 1 dedicated university counsellor and 7 school counsellors

University Outcomes

The academic model produces strong outcomes. In 2025:

• 155 graduates received 522 university offers
• Over 98% proceeded directly to post-secondary institutions
• $4.17M+ in merit scholarships were awarded to the graduating class
• Students secured placements at leading universities in Canada, the USA, the UK, and Australia
• Over the past 5 years, 10 students gained entry to Ivy League or Oxbridge institutions

English Language Support

Recognising that most students are non-native English speakers, Bodwell offers the Academic English Programme (AEP) — a specialised ESL bridge programme that transitions students into the mainstream academic curriculum. This ensures students are not disadvantaged by language barriers and can access the full academic programme.

Life on the Waterfront Campus

Bodwell High School occupies a distinctive waterfront campus in North Vancouver, situated at 955 Harbourside Drive on the shores of Burrard Inlet. The campus is widely described as one of the most desirable school environments in Canada, combining urban convenience with natural beauty — mountains, ocean, and a vibrant city all within reach.

The campus is remarkably well-equipped for a school of its size (approximately 3 acres / 12,000 m²):

The Boarding Experience

Boarding is a central feature of Bodwell's identity. With over 500 boarding spaces across four residential halls, the vast majority of students (approximately 95%) are international boarders. The school emphasises that the residence is not merely accommodation but a home — supported by houseparents, resident advisors, and an on-site nursing team.

Location and Access

The campus is approximately 10 minutes by car from Lonsdale Quay, where the SeaBus provides a scenic 12-minute crossing to downtown Vancouver. Vancouver International Airport is approximately 30 minutes away by car. The school runs bus routes across North Vancouver and provides airport shuttle services for arriving and departing students.

Bodwell High School is one of Canada's most internationally diverse boarding schools, with approximately 95% of its ~550 students coming from outside Canada, representing over 40 nationalities. Pastoral Support

The school invests heavily in student wellbeing. With 8 counsellors (7 school counsellors + 1 university counsellor), an on-site nursing team, and a structured boarding programme, Bodwell ensures that students — many of whom are living away from home for the first time — feel supported academically, emotionally, and physically.

The residential experience is deliberately designed to feel like home: shared dining in two cafeterias, evening study halls, and a culture of care that traces directly to the founder's original vision.
