A 70-Year Journey

In September 1956, Anthony McKenna opened a small school in a Lisbon apartment with just nine students. The aim was straightforward: to give children of American expatriate engineers an uninterrupted American education while their families were posted in Portugal.

From those modest beginnings, the school — originally known as St. Columban's — expanded steadily throughout the 1960s and 1970s, adding campuses and programmes to meet the growing demand from Lisbon's international community. By the 1990s, governance had transitioned to a U.S. nonprofit foundation, providing a stable, mission-aligned structure that exists to this day.

The Carlucci Name

In 2001, the school was renamed the Carlucci American International School of Lisbon in honour of Frank C. Carlucci, a distinguished American statesman and former U.S. Secretary of Defense who had strong ties to Portugal. This renaming reflected both the school's deep American identity and its appreciation of the diplomatic relationships that made its founding possible.

Portugal's Unique American School

Today CAISL occupies a dedicated campus in Linhó, Sintra and holds the distinction of being the only U.S. State Department–sponsored school in Portugal. This sponsorship underpins its governance, quality standards, and its close alignment with the U.S. educational system.

Two Routes to University Readiness

CAISL's academic programme is built on the American college-preparatory model, a tradition that runs from Early Childhood through Grade 12. All graduating students earn a U.S. High School Diploma, and the school reports a 100% graduation and university acceptance rate.

In Grades 11 and 12, students may additionally pursue the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP), giving CAISL a distinctive "two diplomas" offer. This dual-pathway structure gives families flexibility while maintaining academic rigour throughout.

How CAISL Admissions Works

CAISL operates a rolling admissions model: applications are accepted year-round and decisions are made whenever a space becomes available in the relevant grade. This approach suits the mobile expatriate community the school primarily serves, where families may receive postings with little advance notice.

Eligibility Criteria

• Early Childhood (EC3–Kindergarten): Age-based eligibility — students must reach the required age by 1 September of the entry year (EC3=3 years, EC4=4 years, Kindergarten=5 years, Grade 1=6 years). EC applicants must also demonstrate independent toileting and self-feeding.
• All grades: Academic records, behavioural history, and any support needs are reviewed.
• High School (Grades 9–12): A language assessment may be required prior to enrolment to confirm sufficient English reading and language proficiency for success in the academic programme.
