The Boarding House as Home

At the heart of campus life are the ten boarding houses — Founders, East, West, Tatham, Farfield, Pascoe, Baines, Mackenzie, Ralfe, and McCormick — each housing approximately 60 boys. Junior boys share larger dormitories while senior boys enjoy more private accommodation, often in single or double rooms. Each house has its own common rooms, traditions, and identity, led by a resident Housemaster and a prefect body. The house system creates the school's famous brotherhood — the bonds formed here, often described by alumni as the defining feature of their Michaelhouse experience, last a lifetime.

Register Early — Very Early

Michaelhouse's admissions culture is shaped by genuine demand and limited capacity. The school accepts approximately 120 new boys into Grade 8 (E Block) each year, and applications can — and frequently are — registered from early childhood, even at birth. The school actively encourages families to register by the end of Grade 6 to ensure their son can be considered in the main admissions round.

For Grade 8 entry in 2027, the registration deadline was 31 January 2026. Applications received after this date are placed on a formal waitlist.

The Admissions Criteria

Michaelhouse is non-sectarian and welcomes boys from all religious and cultural backgrounds. Selection for Grade 8 is based on three pillars:

1. Academic record — recent school reports demonstrating consistent performance
2. Personal interview — a formal, individual interview with the Rector or a Deputy Rector; families typically accompany the boy but the interview itself focuses on the student
3. Headmaster's recommendation — a confidential report from the applicant's current school principal

No standardised entrance examination is required. English proficiency is expected, as English is the sole medium of instruction, but no formal language test is administered.

Transfers into Grades 9–10

Admission to Grades 9 or 10 (D and C Block) is possible but only where vacancies exist. The same criteria apply: school reports, interview, and headmaster's recommendation. Families are advised to make early enquiries and to expect placement on a waitlist in most years.

Campus Visit

Families are invited to visit the Balgowan campus during Grade 6, allowing boys and parents to experience the school firsthand before the formal application is assessed. This open-day visit is an integral part of the admissions process and is strongly encouraged.

Fees and Financial Support

The 2026 all-inclusive annual boarding and tuition fee is ZAR 417,000 for all grades (8–12). The registration fee on application is ZAR 950. South African residents pay a one-time acceptance fee of ZAR 81,250, while international/non-resident families pay ZAR 208,500 of which ZAR 76,250 is refundable on departure.

A broad range of merit scholarships is available, covering up to 75% of fees, across academic, sports, music, all-rounder, and arts categories. State school applicants have dedicated scholarship streams (Major and Minor Trust Scholarships). This makes Michaelhouse accessible to a wider socio-economic range than the headline fee suggests.
