Community and Co-Curricular Life
Beyond its academic reputation, St Paul's is distinguished by the depth and breadth of its community life. The school has structured its day to make co-curricular participation a daily experience rather than an afterthought.
The House System
All Senior School boys belong to one of eight houses, which serve as the foundation of pastoral care, inter-house competition and peer mentoring across year groups. Prep School pupils belong to one of four houses (Ash, Beech, Oak, Thorn). Houses provide identity, belonging and a vertical community across ages.
Over 90 Clubs and Societies
The school runs more than 90 clubs and societies weekly, facilitated by the 100-minute lunch break. These span:
Sports:
- Football, Rugby, Cricket, Tennis, Athletics, Swimming, Water Polo
- Rowing (Boat Club with river access), Fencing, Judo, Rackets, Eton Fives
- Basketball, Table Tennis, Badminton
Music and Arts:
- Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Chamber Music, Concert Choir, Chapel Choir
- Drama Company (productions in the Dorfman Theatre)
- Art Club, Film-Making Society, Pottery Club
Academic and Interest Societies:
- Debating Society, Model United Nations (student-hosted annual conference)
- Chess, Bridge, Go clubs
- Engineering Society, Bio-Medical Society, EcoSoc
- Halley Research Community (Astronomy/Space)
- Law Society, Medical Society, Politics & Economics Society
- BAME Society, Spectrum (LGBTQ+), Young Enterprise
- Team Firefly — a Greenpower Formula-24 electric car racing team
- Mandarin Club, AI Club, Junior Forensics, Green Team
Student Ownership
A particularly notable feature is that students are actively encouraged to found new clubs. The structure is intentionally open — if boys have an interest not yet covered, they can propose it, and new societies regularly emerge. This fosters entrepreneurial thinking and genuine student ownership of school life.
Model United Nations
St Paul's co-hosts an annual MUN conference planned and organised by a student Secretariat — an example of the school's commitment to student leadership and global citizenship in practice.

Academic Standards and Results
St Paul's School has educated some of Britain's brightest minds for over 500 years, and its academic results remain among the highest in the country.
A-Level Performance
The school's A-Level outcomes are consistently exceptional:
- 2025: 59.3% A*, 92.5% A*–A
- 2024: 58% A*, 88% A*–A
- 2022: 69% A*, 95.5% A*–A
In 2024, 87% of leavers met their first-choice university offer (92% met their first or insurance offer), a remarkable outcome in a competitive admissions landscape.
IGCSE Performance
At IGCSE level (Year 11), the results are equally impressive. In 2022, approximately 75% of all grades were grade 9s (the highest possible), and 98.9% were grade 7–9 (the equivalent of the old A*/A range). Essentially all candidates pass with high grades.
University Destinations
St Paul's is one of England's most prolific Oxbridge feeders:
- Over a quarter of UK-bound leavers go to Oxford or Cambridge
- ~87% of UK-bound leavers go to Russell Group universities
- 32 pupils accepted places at leading US universities in 2025, including Harvard and Yale (3 each), Brown, Princeton and Duke
Curriculum
All boys follow a broad IGCSE programme (eight or more subjects at age 16) before specialising in A-Levels at Sixth Form. The A-Level subject offering is wide, spanning sciences, humanities, arts and classical languages — including Ancient History, Further Mathematics, Greek, Latin, Theatre Arts and Philosophy.
Approach to Learning
The school's academic culture is characterised by intellectual rigour and genuine curiosity rather than rote learning. The 100-minute lunch break is structured to allow boys to pursue clubs and societies, ensuring that academic ambition is balanced with broad personal development. Faculty-run subject societies (such as the Pask Society for Physics, Bio-Medical Society and Classics Society) extend learning well beyond the timetable.
Three Pillars: Scholarship, Character and Service
Founded in 1509 with a vision of universal access to education, St Paul's is guided by three pillars — Scholarship, Character, Service — and five core values: Respect, Kindness, Humility, Integrity and Resilience.

Educational Philosophy
St Paul's School's philosophy is rooted in its 1509 founding vision, when John Colet — Dean of St Paul's Cathedral — established the school to educate 'children of all nations and countries indifferently'. This spirit of openness, intellectual ambition and social responsibility underpins the school's identity more than five centuries later.
The Mission
The school's official mission statement reads:
"Our vision is to nurture a generation of Paulines that will make a positive contribution to the world."
This vision is expressed through three pillars:
- Scholarship — rigorous, curious intellectual engagement
- Character — personal development guided by core values
- Service — responsibility to the wider community and world
Core Values
The five core values are:
- Respect
- Kindness
- Humility
- Integrity
- Resilience
These are not merely displayed on walls but are actively integrated into pastoral care, the house system and co-curricular expectations.
Balancing Excellence with Purpose
The school describes itself as aiming to be 'the country's top academic school' while simultaneously ensuring boys 'lead purposeful, socially responsible lives'. This is not merely rhetorical: the school's bursary programme (the Founder's Awards) ensures that financial background does not prevent talented boys from attending, echoing Colet's original intent.
Character Through Structure
The co-curricular programme — over 90 clubs, a house system, community service and the unique 100-minute lunch break — is deliberately designed to develop character alongside academic excellence. Year 10 boys are required to participate in 'Monday Activities', broadening their cultural and physical experiences. The school believes that intellectual and personal excellence are inseparable.

The 100-Minute Lunch Break
One of St Paul's most distinctive features is its 100-minute structured lunch break, during which the majority of the 90+ clubs, societies and sports activities take place. This design allows the school to function as a day school while providing an activity programme comparable to boarding schools — the school explicitly describes this as 'unique' in a London day school context.
