The 5-I Values: Wellington's Holistic Educational Philosophy
Wellington Bangkok's education is shaped by five core values — Inspired, Intellectual, Independent, Individual, Inclusive — alongside virtues of kindness, integrity, courage and responsibility.

The 5-I Philosophy at Wellington College Bangkok
At the heart of Wellington College International Bangkok's educational approach are the 5-I values: Inspired, Intellectual, Independent, Individual, and Inclusive. These are not merely aspirational slogans; they actively shape lesson design, pastoral programmes, and the school's daily culture.
What Each Value Means in Practice
- Inspired — Teachers aim to ignite curiosity and a lifelong love of learning, moving beyond rote memorisation toward genuine intellectual engagement.
- Intellectual — Academic rigour is prized. Students are encouraged to think critically, debate ideas, and pursue depth rather than superficial coverage.
- Independent — Self-directed learning, personal responsibility for academic progress, and the development of strong study habits are cultivated from the earliest years.
- Individual — Every student's unique strengths, interests and background are recognised and celebrated, with personalised pastoral support through the House Tutor system.
- Inclusive — Wellington's community of approximately 15 nationalities is embraced as a strength. EAL and Learning Support teams ensure no student is left behind.
Character as Curriculum
Underpinning the 5-I framework is a broader set of character virtues: kindness, respect, integrity, courage, and responsibility. These are taught explicitly through assemblies, House activities, and dedicated wellbeing workshops, and are assessed informally through teacher–tutor relationships. Wellington believes that character development and academic achievement are inseparable — that the qualities which make a good learner also make a good citizen.
Enquiry-Based Learning
Academically, Wellington employs an enquiry-based learning model. Rather than passive reception of information, students are challenged to ask questions, investigate problems, and construct their own understanding. This approach aligns naturally with the Cambridge IGCSE and A-Level frameworks, both of which reward higher-order thinking, extended writing, and independent research skills.
Pastoral Architecture
The House system is the structural embodiment of the 5-I philosophy. Every student belongs to a House and is assigned a House Tutor — a consistent adult advocate who monitors wellbeing, celebrates achievements, and supports each child through challenges. Houses deliberately mix year groups, so older students mentor younger ones, embedding the values of responsibility and inclusivity organically into daily life.
Taken together, Wellington's philosophy positions academic excellence not as an end in itself but as one dimension of a broader flourishing — producing graduates who are intellectually confident, emotionally resilient, and genuinely engaged with the world around them.

Campus & Facilities Overview
Wellington College International Bangkok occupies 70 rai (approximately 28 acres) of landscaped grounds in the Krungthep Kreetha district of east Bangkok, adjacent to the Unico Grande Golf Club. The campus is designed to offer an environment that matches the ambition of its educational programme: expansive, purpose-built, and constantly evolving.
Learning Buildings
- Skylight Building (Senior School) — A six-storey structure opened in 2021 featuring a dramatic central atrium, a cylindrical library designed for reading, reflection and collaboration, and specialist classrooms for Years 7–13.
- Crowthorne Building (Senior School) — Opened in August 2025, this state-of-the-art addition provides further contemporary classrooms and learning spaces for secondary students, embodying twenty-first-century pedagogical design.
- Junior School & Early Years — Purpose-built for younger learners, with free-flow indoor–outdoor learning studios, dedicated playgrounds, and learning gardens that allow Early Years children direct access to outdoor exploratory play.
Sports Facilities
Wellington's sporting infrastructure is among the finest of any international school in Southeast Asia:
- Two swimming pools: a 25m training pool and an Olympic 50m competition pool
- Full-sized grassed football pitches and artificial turf multi-sport pitches
- A 400m athletics track
- 8+ tennis courts
- A golf practice range (reflecting the school's sports scholarship programme in golf)
- Specialist indoor halls for basketball, gymnastics, and dance
- A high-performance gym and fitness suite
Performing Arts
The Wellington Theatre is a 600-seat indoor auditorium serving drama productions, musical performances, whole-school assemblies, and visiting speakers. Complementing it are dedicated art studios, music rooms, and design technology spaces aligned with the IGCSE and A-Level subject offer.
Campus Atmosphere
A scenic lagoon and extensive green space run through the campus, giving Wellington a distinctive parkland quality rare in Bangkok. Students describe the environment as open and unhurried — a significant contrast to the urban density surrounding it. The campus includes an on-site school shop (adjacent to the Theatre in the Senior School car park) selling uniforms and supplies, and a catered dining operation run by Epicure, which provides freshly prepared hot lunches daily.

Admissions at Wellington College International Bangkok
Wellington College International Bangkok describes itself explicitly as academically selective: every applicant across all year groups undergoes a formal assessment before being offered a place. There are no publicly advertised acceptance rates, but the competitive nature of the process is clear from the school's own communications.
Assessment by Stage
Early Years (Ages 2–4, Pre-Nursery, Nursery, Reception)
Assessment at this stage is informal and play-based. Families meet with staff to discuss the child's development; the primary purpose is to gauge readiness and ensure a good fit rather than to test academic knowledge.
Primary (Years 1–6, Ages 5–10)
Applicants are invited for an in-school assessment of approximately one hour. A teacher reviews reading, writing, phonics and spoken English. The school notes that no special preparation is required, and the tone is relaxed. Places are offered to children who demonstrate age-appropriate literacy foundations.
Secondary (Years 7–11, Ages 11–16)
This is where the process becomes most rigorous. Applicants sit a computer-based cognitive ability test (CAT) and a creative writing task. These are followed by a brief informal interview — conducted in English — in which students discuss an object or topic of their own choosing. The CAT score is taken seriously: high scores are a prerequisite for academic scholarship consideration.
Sixth Form (Years 12–13, Ages 17–18)
Entry into the Sixth Form is primarily from within Year 11. External applicants are expected to demonstrate strong IGCSE results; a review of academic records and likely an interview are part of the process.
Scholarship Programme
Wellington offers a competitive merit-based scholarship programme across three categories:
- Academic Scholarships — Available for entry into Years 9, 10 and 12. Candidates must achieve high CAT scores and demonstrate outstanding academic potential. Awards can reach significant partial remissions of fees.
- Sports Scholarships — Available from Year 7 upward. Targeted at students competing at national level in golf, swimming and football. Applications for the 2027 entry cohort close on 17 October 2026.
- Music Scholarships — Available for Years 7, 9 and 12. Candidates are expected to perform at approximately Grade 8 level. Applications close 1 January 2027 for 2027 entry.
All scholarships are merit-based and may cover up to 70% of annual tuition fees. There is no published general financial need-based aid programme.
Key Numbers
- One-time registration/acceptance fee: THB 225,000 (classified as enrollment fee)
- Refundable deposit: THB 175,000 (returned on graduation or withdrawal)
- Annual tuition ranges from THB 615,250 (Daycare) to THB 1,240,137 (Year 12)

Academic Culture at Wellington College International Bangkok
Curriculum Framework
Wellington College International Bangkok operates the British National Curriculum from Early Years through to Sixth Form. The academic journey is structured as follows:
- Early Years & Primary (Ages 2–10): Foundation to Year 6, following the English National Curriculum adapted for an international setting.
- Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9, Ages 11–13): Broad curriculum including humanities, sciences, languages, arts and technology.
- IGCSE (Years 10–11, Ages 14–15): Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education. Students select a range of subjects, typically 8–10, culminating in external Cambridge examinations.
- A-Levels (Years 12–13, Ages 16–17): Cambridge Advanced Level qualifications in 3–4 subjects, the standard entry qualification for UK universities and widely recognised globally.
Notably, the school does not offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.
Teaching Philosophy
Wellington teachers are recruited to high standards — many are British-trained and hold postgraduate qualifications. The school's pedagogical approach emphasises:
- Enquiry-based learning: Students are encouraged to interrogate sources, debate interpretations, and construct arguments independently.
- Higher-order thinking: IGCSE and A-Level curricula naturally reward analysis, evaluation and synthesis, and Wellington's teaching is aligned to these demands from Year 7 onwards.
- Co-curricular integration: Academic learning is explicitly connected to Wellington Extra (co-curricular activities) — students pursuing the Extended Project Qualification or Duke of Edinburgh, for example, develop research and self-management skills that reinforce classroom learning.
University Destinations
Wellington's inaugural graduating class (Class of 2026) demonstrated the school's academic ambition dramatically:
- 150+ university offers received in total
- Offers from Imperial College London, UCL, King's College London (UK Russell Group)
- Offers from Yale University, Stanford University, Columbia University (US Ivy League / top research universities)
This is a remarkable outcome for a school that opened only in 2018 and suggests a strong university counselling programme alongside genuine academic attainment.
Accreditation
Wellington holds:
- CIS Accreditation (Council of International Schools) — awarded 12 January 2024
- COBIS Patron's Accreditation — achieved 2019, the first school in history to earn this in its inaugural year
- Status as a Cambridge International Examinations approved centre
These accreditations provide external validation of the school's academic standards and governance, and are a key signal of quality for internationally mobile families.
Pastoral Care, Houses and Wellbeing: Building Community at Wellington Bangkok

Community Life at Wellington College International Bangkok
The House System
Like its parent institution in Berkshire, England, Wellington Bangkok operates a traditional House system. Every student from Year 1 upward is assigned to a House and allocated a House Tutor — a consistent adult mentor who tracks their academic progress, monitors wellbeing, and advocates for them within the school community.
Houses deliberately span year groups, meaning older students naturally interact with and mentor younger peers. This vertical community structure fosters:
- A sense of belonging beyond the peer group of the same academic year
- Leadership opportunities for older students who take on mentoring roles
- Cross-cultural friendships given Wellington's multi-national student body (~15 nationalities)
Support Services
EAL (English as an Additional Language): A dedicated EAL team supports students for whom English is not a first language — a significant proportion given Wellington's Thai and international student mix. Support ranges from intensive language immersion for new joiners to lighter-touch academic language coaching for more proficient speakers.
Learning Support: A separate Learning Support team works with students who have identified learning differences or require additional academic scaffolding. Wellington emphasises that support is discreet, positive and integrated into mainstream school life.
Enrichment and Co-Curricular Life
Wellington Extra is the school's co-curricular programme, offering dozens of activities across sport, arts, languages, STEM and service. Participation is broad and enthusiastic — the school describes its enrichment as a key pillar of student development, not an optional add-on. Notable activities include:
- Competitive sports teams (football, swimming, tennis, athletics, golf)
- A 600-seat theatre programme (drama productions, music concerts)
- Robotics and LEGO Robotics clubs
- Choir, Drum Corps, Art & Mosaics
- Language clubs (French, Mandarin Chinese)
- Yoga, Debating, Stop-Motion Animation
Parent Community
Parents are actively engaged through workshops on wellbeing, curriculum evenings, and regular communication from House Tutors. The school's location in east Bangkok — a residential area popular with both expatriate and affluent Thai families — means many parents share similar professional and social networks, contributing to a cohesive parent community.
