Ghana International School's main campus on 2nd Circular Road, Cantonments has been continuously developed since 1956 and today offers a remarkably comprehensive set of facilities for a school of its size. The school fields competitive teams in badminton, basketball, field hockey, handball, football, volleyball, table tennis, athletics, and swimming. House competitions run throughout the academic year, giving students at all ability levels a pathway to participate in team sport.

• 6 science laboratories (2 biology, 2 chemistry, 2 physics) in the secondary section
• 5 computer laboratories across both sections (2 in primary, each with 33 computers; 3 in secondary, each with 30 computers)

With 70 years of history, Ghana International School has accumulated a set of community traditions that give it a distinctive character among Accra's international schools. The PTA Charity Walk

Perhaps the most iconic of these traditions is the annual PTA Charity Walk — a 13-kilometre walk organised in support of Pantang Psychiatric Hospital, a Ghanaian public mental health institution. The walk has been running for over 40 years and is described as a "stalwart in the GIS calendar." It involves students, staff, parents, and the wider school community, and exemplifies the school's philosophy of social responsibility made practical. In the 2025/26 academic year, the walk is scheduled for 8 November 2025.

Celebrating International Identity

UN Day (24 October) is observed annually as a community celebration of the school's multicultural identity. Students and families from across the school's many nationalities participate in cultural displays, traditional dress, and country-specific presentations — a natural expression of GIS's founding motto, "Understanding of Each Other."

A Founding Rooted in Inclusion

Ghana International School traces its origins to 1 September 1955, when it opened its doors at Legion Hall in Accra under the name Gold Coast International School. It was established with just 38 students at a moment in history when international schools were extraordinarily rare across West Africa. The founders were driven by an explicit ambition: to provide high-quality international education to children of all races, nationalities, and creeds — a remarkably progressive vision for a colonial-era institution.

The timing was significant. Ghana was approaching independence from Britain (which it achieved in 1957), and Accra was becoming an increasingly cosmopolitan city. Diplomats, expatriate professionals, and forward-thinking Ghanaian families needed an educational option that matched international standards.

Early Expansion and a Permanent Home

Within months of opening, the school outgrew its temporary premises. In January 1956, GIS relocated to its permanent site on 2nd Circular Road, Cantonments — the address it still occupies today. A formal construction ceremony was held on 29 October 1956, marking the beginning of a sustained programme of campus development that would span the following seven decades.

The school was renamed Ghana International School following the country's independence, reflecting its evolving identity as a post-colonial institution committed to international educational values within the newly sovereign nation.

Seven Decades of Growth

Over the following years, GIS expanded systematically:

• Student enrolment grew from 38 to approximately 1,304 students across all year groups
• The faculty expanded to 138 teaching staff, supporting a student-teacher ratio of roughly 9.5:1
• Campus facilities grew to include science laboratories, swimming pools, music conservatories, language laboratories, and dedicated arts spaces
• The school became the first CIS-accredited school in Ghana, a status it reaffirmed with a re-accreditation in April 2025

In August 2025, GIS formally launched its 70th Anniversary celebrations, marking the occasion with events highlighted by the Ghana News Agency, which described it as "one of Africa's foremost international schools."

Continuity of Mission

Perhaps the most striking aspect of GIS's history is the consistency of its founding ideals. The school's motto — "Understanding of Each Other" — remains unchanged, and its mission statement continues to emphasise internationally diverse experience, holistic development, and rigorous academic standards.
