History: From Beijing Inspiration to Bangkok Pioneer

The Founding Vision

The story of MABIS begins not in Bangkok, but in Beijing. Serene Jiratanan, a Thai educator and entrepreneur, witnessed first-hand the transformative effect of a Montessori education on her daughter while living in China. She observed a child who was curious, self-directed, multilingual and deeply engaged — and she asked herself: why is there nothing like this in Bangkok?

Returning to Thailand in 2010, Jiratanan set about changing that. With the loving support of her parents — including her late father, Khun Virakiert Jaratanan — she established the Montessori Academy Bangkok International School (MABIS) as a small nursery programme in the Bangna district of Bangkok.

What Made MABIS a Pioneer

When MABIS opened, Bangkok already had dozens of international schools, but none offering an authentic, trilingual Montessori experience. The school was the first in Bangkok — and among very few in Southeast Asia — to deliver Montessori education in three languages simultaneously: English, Chinese and Thai. This was a bold pedagogical and commercial bet in a city where parents often prioritise brand-name curricula (IB, A-Level, AP).

The bet paid off. The school earned WASC accreditation (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), becoming one of the first Montessori schools outside the United States to achieve this recognition. It also became a member of the American Montessori Society and the Montessori Australia Foundation, connecting it to global networks of Montessori practice.

MABIS remains a family-led institution. Serene Jiratanan serves as School Director and Principal, while Vontharnee (May) Jiratanan handles finance and coordination. The school draws on an internationally recognised advisory board including AMI-trained Montessori educators such as Laurie Ewert-Krocker and Lilian Bryan, ensuring pedagogical fidelity as the school has grown.

The Montessori Curriculum Structure

Casa / Children's House (3–6 years): The classic Montessori primary environment. Children work with the celebrated Montessori materials — pink tower, bead chains, sandpaper letters — in English, Chinese and Thai. Reading, writing and early numeracy emerge organically from this work.

Elementary (6–12 years): The "Great Lessons" anchor a cosmic curriculum connecting history, science, language and mathematics. Children work in three-year mixed-age cycles (6–9 and 9–12), developing research skills, collaborative projects and genuine expertise in areas of personal interest.

What MABIS Is Looking For

MABIS does not conduct academic entrance exams in the conventional sense. The student assessment is developmentally oriented — understanding where a child is, not gatekeeping on what they already know. The school's Montessori philosophy holds that all children have an innate drive to learn; the school's role is to meet each child where they are.

That said, families should understand that the school's trilingual, Montessori approach requires genuine alignment with its educational philosophy. Parents who prefer a highly structured, test-driven, traditionally graded environment may find the culture a poor fit, regardless of their child's abilities.

English Language Support

One notable feature of MABIS admissions is that English proficiency is not a barrier to entry. The school operates an EAL (English as an Additional Language) programme to support students who are developing their English fluency. This is consistent with the school's genuine multilingualism — a child arriving with strong Thai but limited English is as welcome as one who arrives fluent in English but new to Thai or Mandarin.

Fees at a Glance

For context, annual tuition ranges from THB 410,000 (Toddler half-day) to THB 580,000 (Middle School, Grades 7–9). A one-time enrollment fee of THB 120,000 applies for new students, alongside a THB 4,000 application fee. These fees place MABIS in the mid-range of Bangkok's international school market — significantly below the largest international schools, but reflecting genuine international-quality provision.
