Origins: A Family's Vision

Lighthouse International School was founded in 2019 by Dan and Msk Skitch, a couple whose personal experience as parents of six children drove them to establish a school that combined academic rigour with genuine warmth. Based in Phuket — Thailand's largest island and home to a sizeable international community — the school was conceived as an alternative to the more transactional model of many international schools: smaller, more personal, and rooted in Canadian family values.

Dan Skitch serves as Director and CEO, and his direct involvement in the school's daily life has shaped its culture from the outset.

Growth Milestones

2019 – Lighthouse International School founded.

2021 – The Chalong Kindergarten campus (34/4 Moo 7 Soi Jaofa 57, Chalong) officially opens, catering to children aged 1–7. The campus is designed to be a joyful, child-centred environment with indoor and outdoor play areas, a cafeteria, and dedicated early years learning spaces.

2021–2023 – The Rawai Primary campus (21/1 Soi Salika, Rawai) develops, adding facilities including a covered sports court, outdoor play equipment, a rock-climbing wall, and a full-size artificial football pitch.

2024 – Phase 1 of the new Rawai Secondary campus (95/43 Moo 4 Soi Sanya Yukhunthon, Rawai) opens, housing the secondary school in a purpose-built facility adjacent to an adventure centre and skate park. Full completion of the campus is planned for 2026.

2025 – Alberta Education grants Lighthouse formal curriculum accreditation, a landmark moment that makes it the first school in Phuket — and reportedly the first in all of Thailand — to hold this recognition. The school has also maintained Cambridge International accreditation for IGCSE and A-Level programmes throughout its secondary years, and holds a Thai Ministry of Education licence to educate students aged 1–18.

Assessment and Qualifications

Students sitting the Alberta pathway complete Alberta Education Diploma examinations — externally marked assessments that carry significant weight in Canadian and North American university admissions. Chalong Kindergarten Campus

Located at 34/4 Moo 7 Soi Jaofa 57, Chalong, this campus opened in 2021 and serves children aged 1–7 (playgroup through early primary). The environment is intentionally nurturing: colourful, low-pressure, and designed to make young children love coming to school. It features dedicated indoor and outdoor play areas, a cafeteria, and early learning activity rooms. The Chalong campus operates separately under the brand Lighthouse International Kindergartens.

Rawai Primary Campus

Situated at 21/1 Soi Salika, Rawai, this campus serves students approximately aged 5–12. It is notable for blending natural surroundings with quality learning infrastructure. Key facilities include:

• A covered sports court for basketball, volleyball, and badminton
• An indoor rock-climbing wall — an unusual feature that doubles as a physical education resource and a metaphor for the school's attitude to challenge
• A full-size artificial turf football pitch used by the Lions Football Academy
• Outdoor play areas with large equipment and a school garden
• An ELS English Language Support centre embedded in the primary building

Rawai Secondary Campus

The newest and most ambitious of the three campuses, located at 95/43 Moo 4 Soi Sanya Yukhunthon, Rawai, Phase 1 opened in 2024. This campus is purpose-built for the secondary school (ages 12–18) and features:

Fees Include More Than Just Tuition

A notable aspect of Lighthouse's fee structure is that textbooks, one school uniform, and healthy daily lunches and snacks are included in the tuition fee for primary students — a practical benefit that distinguishes the school from peers who charge these separately. A school minibus service covering Phuket Town, Karon, Kata, Chalong, and Rawai is available as an optional add-on.

Non-Selective but Not Unrestricted

Lighthouse International School is explicit that it is not academically selective — a deliberate policy choice that reflects the founders' belief that a broad range of motivated learners should have access to quality international education. Applications are accepted throughout the year, and places are offered whenever spaces are available in the relevant year group.

However, non-selective does not mean anything-goes. The school's admissions policy makes clear that sufficient English proficiency is a prerequisite, as all instruction is delivered in English. Students who arrive with limited English can access the school's English Language Support (ELS) programme, but a minimum level of communicative competence is expected before enrolment.

The Admissions Process

The process is straightforward and accessible:

1. Application submission with supporting documents (most recent school report cards, passport/ID copy, birth certificate, photographs). Thai students and international students have slightly different document requirements as specified by the Thai Ministry of Education.

2. Placement tests in English and Mathematics are arranged by the school. These are not competitive examinations designed to exclude — rather, they are diagnostic tools to ensure each student is placed in the most appropriate year group and to identify any learning support needs from day one.

3. Interview with a member of the Leadership Team. Both the student and parent(s) are involved. For secondary applicants, the interview also explores the student's interests, goals, and suitability for the school's personalised learning model.

4. Decision and feedback: Where a place cannot be offered — for example because the year group is full or the student's needs cannot be met — the school communicates reasons clearly and an appeal process is available.

Class Size as an Admissions Constraint

The primary driver of admissions limits at Lighthouse is not academic selectivity but class size discipline. Secondary classes are hard-capped at 24 students and the school actively targets keeping most classes below 20. This means that in popular year groups, a waiting situation can arise not because of test performance but because the school is committed to preserving its small-class environment.

Scholarships for Thai Students

Lighthouse offers scholarships specifically for Thai national students entering the secondary school, based on academic achievement and/or football ability. This reflects both a commitment to local community access and the school's strong football programme through the Lions Academy.
