A Vision Born in 1983

The British School of Lomé was established in September 1983 by Ian Sayer and his wife, responding to a clear need among English-speaking expatriate families living in Togo's capital. Over four decades, BSL has grown substantially. Today the school enrolls more than 270 students drawn from over 40 countries, reflecting the cosmopolitan nature of Lomé as a diplomatic and business hub in West Africa. The curriculum has expanded from the original British National Curriculum to encompass the Cambridge IGCSE at secondary level and the prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) at the sixth form level — a curriculum blend that serves both university-bound students targeting UK institutions and those seeking internationally recognised qualifications for global university entry.

Academic Milestones

In 2025, BSL achieved a landmark result: a 100% pass rate in the IB Diploma examinations, with all candidates earning the full diploma. This result underscores the school's sustained investment in academic quality, experienced faculty, and robust student support systems. The school now employs 29 full-time teachers and 10 associate teachers — a staffing model that allows for personalised attention across its small but diverse student body.
