What the one independent source shows

Cambridge International reported that a team from The International School of Penang (Uplands) was named 'Best in Malaysia' in its 2024 Cambridge Science Competition, for research into which desalination method produces the highest and purest yield of water.

This is recognition in a single external subject competition. It does not rank the school overall, and Cambridge International presents it as a competition result rather than an assessment of the whole school.

The published process

According to the school's own materials, admission follows an online application, an appointment-only assessment during term time with 3 to 4 hours allowed for interview and assessment tasks, and then review by an Admissions Committee. The school does not publish an acceptance rate, annual application volume, or current wait-list data.

For secondary applicants whose first language is not English, the school states that assessment begins with CAT4 followed by writing and speaking assessment, and uses Bell Foundation levels: Year 7 entry may be possible at Level B, while Years 9 or 10 require at least Level C.

A historical scholarship route and what is missing

A 2019 IB Diploma Programme scholarship guide required complete applications, records, two recommendations, assessments and a selection interview for shortlisted candidates. This was a scholarship-specific process from that year, not evidence of the standard admissions route today.

Across the official materials, current accreditation and IB records, the available British Schools Overseas report and public directory listings reviewed, no citable current figure was located for a general-admission acceptance rate, year-group waiting list, priority order, published seat availability or mid-year entry rule.

What the school states now

Uplands states that more than 40 nationalities are represented across the school. In the accessible material reviewed, it does not publish current percentages for local versus international students.

The detailed figures are historical

A British Schools Overseas inspection published on 1 December 2011 recorded 523 pupils on roll, including 40 boarders aged 9 to 18 (about 7.6 percent boarders), described pupils as coming from up to 35 nations, and stated the majority spoke English as a second language. These figures are more than a decade old.

An ISBI Schools directory listing reports 265 day pupils and 24 full boarders, about 289 in total and roughly 8.3 percent full boarders. The listing carries no data-as-of date or methodology, so it is not sufficient to confirm current enrolment or boarding ratio.

No current government or education-authority school-level statistics, current inspection or accreditation report, or documented independent survey was found breaking down the present community by nationality, local or international status, language, section or boarding-to-day ratio.

2025 IB results as reported by the school

For the 2025 IB Diploma cohort, Uplands reports an average of 34.4 points against a global average of 30.58, a subject average of 5.47 against 4.89 globally, and that about one in five diploma passers achieved a bilingual diploma. These figures are published by the school and are not independently verified in the evidence.

University destinations

The school's 2025 University Destinations page names institutions including the University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, UCL, LSE, KAIST, NUS, UCLA and the University of Melbourne, among others. The page does not give student counts, cohort size, or state whether these are offers, acceptances or matriculations, so it should be read as a destination list with an unspecified count type.

What a handful of public posts say

Across a small, mixed set of recent public parent and student posts, several mentioned positive teacher interactions, while one former-student comment contrasted weaker IGCSE teaching with stronger IBDP teaching.

This rests on only three posts across two platforms. It is far too small a sample to represent the wider parent or student body, and should be read only as isolated individual impressions.

IB Middle Years Programme authorised

The IB registry records authorisation of Uplands' Middle Years Programme on 26 March 2025. This completes the school's published PYP-MYP-DP continuum and is a significant programme-development milestone.

Families seeking a fully English-medium international pathway have evidence of PYP, MYP, IGCSE/International GCSE and IBDP provision, plus EAL support. Secondary applicants without sufficient academic English should confirm placement: the school states Year 7 may enter at Bell Foundation Level B, while Years 9 and 10 require at least Level C.

Cost as a practical constraint

For 2026/27, the school's official base tuition ranges from RM26,000 for Reception to RM74,400 for Years 12 to 13, before the stated 6 percent SST applying to Years 7 to 13. There are also joining fees, a RM2,500 annual School Development Fund, compulsory RM40 accident insurance, and potentially transport and exam costs.
