Curriculum Structure

The Doon School's academic journey unfolds across three broad phases:

• Classes VII–VIII (Junior Forms): Boys follow the Doon School Curriculum, a holistic, co-curricular-rich programme that prioritises curiosity, breadth and foundational skills above early exam pressure.
• Classes IX–X (Middle School): Students prepare for the ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education), a rigorous board examination widely regarded as among the most demanding in India.
• Classes XI–XII (Senior School): Boys choose between the ISC (Indian School Certificate, the senior continuation of ICSE) or the IB Diploma Programme, which The Doon School has offered since 2006.

Teaching Languages and Faculty

All instruction is in English. Hindi is compulsory across the school. Optional languages available include French and German (ICSE/ISC streams), with IB students choosing from additional language options under the DP Language Acquisition requirement. Approximately 70 faculty serve a student body of around 560 boys — a student-teacher ratio of approximately 8:1, enabling close academic attention.

Learning Support

A dedicated Support for Learning department (6 trained specialists) provides:

• Universal screening for learning differences
• Individual Education Plans for students with dyslexia or similar needs

Virtually 100% of graduates proceed directly to higher education. Recent cohorts have included students matriculating to Stanford, Duke University, UCL, NUS and comparable institutions across the USA, UK, Asia and India. A Fully Residential Community

The Doon School is entirely residential: every one of its approximately 560 boys lives on campus throughout the term. This is not merely a logistical arrangement — it is central to the school's educational model. The boarding environment is where much of the real formation of character, friendship, resilience and leadership takes place.

The House System

Boys are assigned to one of five houses upon entry. Each house is led by a Housemaster (a senior teacher who lives on campus) supported by Dames (residential matrons who provide day-to-day pastoral nurturing). The house system creates:

The School Week

The Doon School operates a Monday–Saturday timetable, with Saturday half-days. Values in Daily Life

The school's pastoral culture is explicitly guided by the Round Square IDEALS and by a culture of treating every individual "with kindness, sensitivity and respect." While there is no separately published anti-bullying policy document, the school's ethos — enforced through Housemasters, tutors and peer structures — creates a climate of mutual accountability.

A Single, Selective Entry Point

Unlike many schools that offer rolling or multi-grade admissions, The Doon School admits boys only at Class VII (age 11–12) and Class VIII (age 12–13). This narrow entry point means that the school's entire community is built from a shared cohort experience, and competition for each available place is intense.

The DSSE Process

The Doon School Scholarship Examination (DSSE) is the sole pathway to admission. The process runs as follows:

• Registration deadline: 10 July (for the 2026 cycle)
• Examination date: 9 August (online MCQ format)
• Subjects tested: English, Mathematics and Science (45 minutes per subject)
• Shortlisting: High-scoring candidates are invited for an interview (conducted in English)
• Outcome: Admission offers and scholarship awards are made following the interview stage

Scholarship Dimension

The DSSE is simultaneously an entrance exam and a scholarship competition. Boys of exceptional merit may be awarded partial or full fee waivers; need-based financial support is also available. This dual function reflects the school's stated mission of serving a "meritocratic India" — ensuring that talent, not only family wealth, determines access.

English Proficiency

Since all instruction at The Doon School is delivered in English, strong English literacy is a non-negotiable prerequisite. The English component of the DSSE assesses reading comprehension, writing and language proficiency appropriate to the entry age.

What the School Seeks

The school explicitly states that it is looking for boys who are exceptional not only academically but "beyond the classroom" — students with curiosity, character and the potential for leadership. The admissions process is therefore designed to identify rounded candidates, not simply high test-scorers.

Origins and Founding Vision

The Doon School was established in 1935 by Satish Ranjan Das, a distinguished Indian barrister who had studied at Manchester Grammar School in England. Das was determined to replicate the character-forming, residential tradition of the great British public schools — but to do so on Indian soil, for Indian boys, free from religious or caste distinctions. He chose Dehradun in the foothills of the Himalayas as the site, and the school opened its doors in what was then a quiet hill-station town.

Growth and Campus Development

Over the following decades The Doon School expanded steadily across its 70-acre Chandbagh campus. Key physical milestones include:

• The Rose Bowl open-air amphitheatre, constructed in the school's early decades and later restored, which has hosted generations of drama productions and cultural evenings.
• The Kilachand Library, redesigned by architect R. Khosla and renovated in 2012 to support digital as well as print research.
• The Art and Media Centre (opened 2010, designed by architect Sandeep Khosla) — a 25,000 sq.ft. building housing painting, sculpture, ceramics, film and photography studios.
• The BML Munjal Auditorium, a renovated 550-seat indoor performance hall with modern acoustics and lighting.
• A new Sports Complex with a 25m heated pool, indoor courts, artificial turf football, floodlit tennis and padel courts.
• The Aqueduct, a glassed dining and social space opened around 2014, adding a modern common-room dimension to campus life.

Academic Evolution

The school has long followed the ICSE and ISC boards but took a significant step forward in 2006 when it became an IB World School, offering the IB Diploma Programme to senior boys (Years 11–12). This dual-track model — ICSE/ISC for the majority alongside the IB DP option — makes The Doon School one of the very few Indian schools to integrate international qualifications at this level.

Membership and Recognition

The Doon School became a member of Round Square in the 1980s, joining a global network of schools committed to the IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service. This membership underpins the school's extensive exchange and service programmes.

Nine decades on, The Doon School's alumni — known as Doscos — occupy the highest echelons of Indian public life. The Round Square IDEALS

Membership of Round Square since the 1980s gives The Doon School's philosophy a formal international framework. The six IDEALS — Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership and Service — are woven into school life through exchange programmes, service projects, conferences and outdoor education.

Pastoral Philosophy

The boarding environment is itself an educational instrument. Boys live in one of five houses, each led by a Housemaster and supported by Dames, tutors and the school counselling team. The house system fosters belonging, competition, mutual accountability and mentorship across age groups. Academic Rigour Without Narrowness

The Doon School resists narrow exam preparation in favour of breadth. Junior Forms (Classes VII–VIII) follow the bespoke Doon School Curriculum, which is heavily co-curricular; middle school follows ICSE; and the senior school offers both ISC and the IB DP.
