Overview

Tenby Schools Penang (None) is an international IGCSE, A-Levels school for ages 3–18 in Penang, Malaysia. Founded in 1960, it has approximately 800 students from 30+ nationalities. Taught in English. Annual tuition: MYR 16,239–MYR 90,561.

Tenby Schools Penang is a STEAM-specialist day school in Tanjung Bungah, Penang, serving 800+ learners aged 3–17 through co-located international and Malaysian-national schools. The international route uses an enhanced English National Curriculum and IPC progression leading to IGCSE, while the national route follows KSSR/KSSM leading to SPM. The school operates a 10-acre purpose-built campus with a 75,000 sq ft STEAM Engine opened in 2024, featuring robotics, XR, computer science and performance spaces. English is the principal instructional language, with Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, and strong EAL provision also offered. With more than 30 nationalities represented, it combines British-international academic rigour with multilingualism, life competencies and pastoral care under the International Schools Partnership network.

Schoozy Intelligence

Our own read of this school, drawn from public sources and kept separate from the school's own material.

A through-school in Penang running British-international and Malaysian-national pathways on one campus, with a purpose-built STEAM centre threading technology through everyday lessons.

Tenby Schools Penang teaches from age three onward on a single Tanjung Bungah campus, offering an enhanced English National Curriculum route to IGCSE and a Malaysian national route to SPM, with more than 800 students from over 30 countries (school-reported). Its three-level, 75,000 sq ft STEAM Engine, opened in 2024, houses robotics, extended reality, computing and design spaces, and the school reported 2025 IGCSE grades of 51% A*-A and a 100% pass rate. Families should note that the published pathways end at IGCSE/SPM, with no on-campus A-Level or IB sixth form verified.

An editorial summary of the sections below — not a rating or ranking.

Best for
Families in or relocating to Penang who want a single through-school offering either a British route to IGCSE or a Malaysian national route to SPM, who value strong STEM and technology facilities, and who are comfortable with a structured, closely-monitored school day and mid-year entry subject to space.
Things to consider
The published pathways end at IGCSE (age 16) and SPM (Form 5); although the canonical listing mentions A-Level and ages to 18, no on-campus A-Level or IB sixth form could be verified, so families wanting a sixth form should confirm directly. Fees are charged per term over three terms and exclude books, uniform, transport, food, co-curricular activities, visits and exam fees. Transport is arranged through separately contracted providers, not a school-operated bus with published fares. Results and awards are self-reported, and no independent ranking, inspection grade or acceptance rate is published.

External mention exists, but no independent ranking or inspection grade found

A Penang state education-promotion brochure describes the school's STEAM programme, but no independently audited ranking or inspection grade was located.

Read analysis

What an outside source says

StudyPENANG, a Penang state education-promotion source, describes Tenby Schools Penang as distinguished by its STEAM Engine, which it says brings robotics, virtual reality, music and technology into everyday learning. This is external descriptive recognition, not an independently audited ranking or inspection grade.

What could not be verified

No independent ranking, inspection grade or named accreditation result was found in the reviewed current search results. The school does report awards, but those claims were located primarily on its own site, so they cannot be treated as independent evidence about the school.

Year-round entry where space allows, with CAT4/NGRT assessment but no published cut score

The school accepts applications year-round subject to space, assesses new entrants with CAT4 or NGRT, and describes a roughly one-to-two-week process, but publishes no acceptance rate, pass score or waiting-list policy.

Read analysis

How entry works, per the school

The school states that applications are accepted throughout the year only where space is available, and that after review applicants may face an assessment and/or interview, with published outcomes of Successful, Not Ready Yet and Conditional Offer. It does not publish acceptance rates, year-group seat availability or a waiting-list policy.

The school's FAQ states the process generally takes around one to two weeks from application to confirmation of a place. It also states the International School term starts in August and the National School term starts in February, and that enrolment is ongoing so students can join during the year.

Assessment used

According to the school's multilingualism page, every new International School student in Year 2 to Year 8 completes CAT4, Year 9 and above completes NGRT, and National School students in Standard 2 to Form 4 complete CAT4. The page does not publish an admissions pass score or threshold.

What independent sources do and don't establish

A third-party school-directory entry carries a historic availability note stating Early Years was full for that academic year with availability for a September 2020 intake. This is a dated signal only and does not establish current waiting-list or seat availability.

No independent government register, inspection or accreditation report, or current seat-availability source located in this search published the school's acceptance rate, current waiting list by year group, admissions priority rules, a named English cut score or boarding-specific admissions constraints.

Two curriculum pathways on one campus, with limited independent data on the mix

The school reports 800-plus students from 30-plus countries across British-international and Malaysian-national pathways, but the only independent figures come from a single undated directory listing.

Read analysis

What the school reports

The school reports more than 800 students from more than 30 countries and operates both British-international and Malaysian-national pathways on the same campus. It does not publish international-versus-local percentage splits.

What one independent listing adds

An undated third-party school-directory listing reports 750 students, 30 nationalities and a 60% local / 40% international split, and lists Malaysian, Korean, Chinese from China, Japanese and Hong Kong among the most common nationalities. The listing provides no methodology or reference date, so these figures should be treated as an unverified signal rather than a confirmed profile.

A separate public Malaysian school-directory listing describes the school as having no boarding. No public regulatory source establishing a boarding or day ratio was located.

2025 IGCSE results reported by the school; no destination data found

The school reports strong 2025 IGCSE grades, but no university destinations were located, and the published international route ends at IGCSE.

Read analysis

Reported examination results

For the 2025 IGCSE examinations, the school reported that 51% of all grades were A*-A, 75% were A*-B, 89% were A*-C, and there was a 100% pass rate. These figures are as published by the school and are not independently verified here.

What is missing

No named university destination, offer, acceptance or matriculation list was found in the reviewed official site, prospectus, news archive or third-party search results. The publicly described international pathway ends at Year 11 and IGCSE rather than a campus sixth form, so families should not assume onward destination data is available.

ASEAN School Awards recognition and 2025 IGCSE results

The school reports a 2026 ASEAN School Awards Judges Choice Award and a STEAM finalist placing, alongside its 2025 IGCSE results. All are self-reported.

Read analysis

Recent recognition

The school reported winning the Judges Choice Award for Innovative Teaching and Learning at the ASEAN School Awards 2026 and being a finalist in the STEAM Award category. This is reported by the school itself and was not independently confirmed here.

Recent results

The school also reported 2025 IGCSE results of 51% A*-A, 75% A*-B, 89% A*-C and a 100% pass rate.

Two pathways ending at IGCSE/SPM, with fees per term and third-party transport

The school suits families wanting an IGCSE or SPM route on one campus; those wanting an on-campus A-Level or IB sixth form, or bundled transport, should check further.

Read analysis

Pathway endpoint to verify

The school fits families seeking either a British-international route to IGCSE or a Malaysian-national route to SPM on one campus. Families specifically wanting an on-campus A-Level or IB Diploma sixth form should verify alternatives, because the published international route ends at Year 11 and the national route at Form 5.

Fees and what they exclude

Tuition is charged per term across three terms, with calculated annual tuition ranging from RM16,239 for Nursery to RM90,561 for Year 11 before taxes and listed exclusions. Books, uniform, transport, food, co-curricular activities, visits and external examination fees are excluded, so families should budget beyond the headline tuition.

Transport arrangement

Transport is facilitated through separately contacted providers rather than a school-operated bus service with published fares. The school lists five providers and public-bus coverage areas, but no airport transfer, boarding transfer or transport price is published, so families should confirm routes and costs directly.

History

The Tenby Schools group began in 1960 when Dorothy Nelson-Doig founded the original Tenby kindergarten, named after her hometown in Wales, for British expatriates in Malaysia. In Penang, Sekolah Sri Pinang was established in 1981 as the first private school in Penang. In 2005, Tenby acquired Sekolah Sri Inai and established Tenby Schools Penang. The school moved to its present 10-acre Tanjung Bungah campus in 2011. It joined the International Schools Partnership in 2018, became a STEAM specialist school in 2023, and opened the STEAM Engine facility in 2024.

Frequently Asked Questions

What SPM results does Tenby Schools Penang achieve on the Malaysian national pathway?

In 2024, students on the Malaysian national pathway achieved an 88% A*–C rate with a 100% pass rate at SPM. The national pathway follows KSSR in Primary and KSSM in Secondary, culminating in the SPM examination at Form 5.

What subjects can my child choose at IGCSE level?

IGCSE students must take English, English Literature, Mathematics, Science (Double Award), and PHSE as compulsory subjects. Optional subjects include Additional Mathematics, Triple Science, Mandarin, Design Technology, Geography, History, ICT, Accounting, Business Studies, Computer Science, Music, Drama, Art, and Physical Education.

What are the three possible outcomes after I apply to Tenby Schools Penang?

After the school reviews your application, there are three published outcomes: Successful (straightforward acceptance), Not Ready Yet (the child is not currently placed but the door is not permanently closed), or Conditional Offer (a place is offered subject to agreed goals being met before starting). This means the school may manage transitions for students with language or learning gaps rather than simply declining them.

Which assessment tests does Tenby Schools Penang use, and is there a pass mark I need to hit?

Every new International School student in Years 2–8 completes the CAT4 cognitive abilities test, while students in Year 9 and above complete the NGRT reading assessment. National School students in Standard 2 to Form 4 also take the CAT4. The school does not publish a pass score or threshold for any of these assessments.

What documents do I need to submit when applying to Tenby Schools Penang?

Required documents include parents' passport or identity card, parents' visa and work permit if applicable, the student's birth certificate (translated into English for non-Malaysians), the student's passport, MyKid or identity card, and previous school reports. Non-Malaysian families should ensure translations are prepared in advance to avoid delays.

What sports and recreational facilities are available on campus?

The 10-acre Tanjung Bungah campus includes a swimming pool with variable depth up to 7 feet (swimming starts from age four), a regulation-size football field, basketball courts, and a multi-purpose hall. Students also have access to biology, chemistry and physics laboratories, a canteen, a community café, and a multilingual library.

What support is available for students who arrive without strong English skills?

The school runs an English Learning Centre that provides structured EAL (English as an Additional Language) support, meaning students who arrive without strong English are supported rather than excluded. The school also describes itself as a trilingual school with English, Malay, and Mandarin embedded from Early Years, which helps students from diverse language backgrounds settle in.

What global programmes can students at Tenby Schools Penang participate in through the ISP network?

As part of the International Schools Partnership (ISP) network, students can join ISP Cultural Exchange (ages 8–18), ISP Virtual Exchange (ages 13–18), ISP Model United Nations, ISP Filmmakers, ISP Artists, ISP Scientists, ISP Changemakers, and ISP Chess Masters. These programmes connect Tenby Penang students with peers across ISP schools worldwide.

What nationalities make up the student body at Tenby Schools Penang?

The school reports more than 800 students from over 30 countries, though it does not publish an official breakdown of nationalities. One undated third-party directory listing suggests the most common nationalities include Malaysian, Korean, Chinese from China, Japanese and Hong Kong students, with an approximate 60% local and 40% international split — though these figures are unverified and should be treated as a rough guide only.

Where can my child continue their studies after finishing IGCSE or SPM at Tenby Schools Penang?

The international pathway at Tenby Schools Penang ends at Year 11 (IGCSE), and the national pathway ends at Form 5 (SPM). No A-Level, IB Diploma or other post-IGCSE programme has been verified at this campus, so families planning long-term studies in Malaysia will need to arrange a transfer to another school for sixth-form education. No university destination data is published by the school.
