Origins (1976)

The International School of Kenya traces its roots to 1976, when the United States Embassy and the Canadian High Commission in Nairobi assumed control of the then-existing Nairobi International School. The first classes were held in August 1976 on a 40-acre former coffee plantation in the Gigiri district — a leafy, diplomatic enclave that remains the school's home today.

The school's founding by two major diplomatic missions reflects its original purpose: to provide a high-quality, internationally-recognised education for the children of expatriate diplomats, government officials, and international organization staff based in Nairobi. This heritage shapes ISK's identity to this day.

Growth and IB Authorization

ISK became one of Kenya's earliest IB-authorized schools:
