Founding (1967)

Island School was established on 19 September 1967 as one of the original schools of the English Schools Foundation, created to provide quality English-medium secondary education for Hong Kong's expanding expatriate community. The school opened its doors with just 237 students in a converted former British military hospital building on Borrett Road in the Mid-Levels.

The founding philosophy was deliberately inclusive: unlike many elite private schools, Island School was conceived as a comprehensive school — open to all English-speaking children regardless of academic ability. This philosophy has been maintained for over five decades.

Growth and Establishment

Over subsequent decades the school grew steadily to its current enrolment of approximately 1,200 students from more than 40 nationalities. It became an IB World School authorised for the Diploma Programme in December 2006, cementing its academic framework and global recognition.

Temporary Relocation and Rebuild (2018–2022)

In 2018 the school temporarily relocated from its historic Borrett Road site to allow for a complete redevelopment of the campus. The project was ambitious: the old buildings were demolished and an entirely new, purpose-built school was constructed over four years.

In August 2022 Island School returned home. The new campus features:

• A double-height sports arena with sprung floor, seating up to 1,200
• Astroturf pitches for football and other sports
• A 300-seat performance space with professional stage

The return to Borrett Road was described by the school community as a homecoming — a modern campus on the same historic ground where Island School began in 1967.

Island School's Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) programme is one of its most celebrated features, with over 70 clubs, teams and activities running throughout the academic year. The breadth reflects the diversity of a student body drawn from more than 40 countries.
