Inspection standing

The Independent Schools Inspectorate reported that, at its inspection of 15 to 17 October 2024, all relevant standards were met, and it identified the revised Sixth Form curriculum and community outreach as significant strengths. This is regulatory inspection evidence about whether standards are met, not a comparative ranking against other schools.

The Good Schools Guide, in an editorial review updated July 2026, describes Tonbridge as an 801-pupil boys' independent boarding school and reports an 8:1 pupil-to-teacher ratio. This is directory or editorial evidence rather than a regulatory inspection, and the pupil figure differs slightly from the inspection roll count.

Entry points and selection (school's own account)

The school's June 2025 Admissions Policy describes Tonbridge as 'academically selective' — a self-description — states that its largest intake is Year 9, and identifies Year 10 and Year 12 as additional entry points. It says the admission decision is final, that there is no appeal process, and that the school may agree to a review before the Headmaster's final decision.

For Year 10 (14+) entry, the school states that applicants who do well in initial screening or hold a very strong UK-school report are invited to sit entrance examinations; strong performers are offered an online interview, and December outcomes are an unconditional offer, a wait-list place, or no offer. The 2024 ISI inspection report records Tonbridge as a school for ages 13 to 18 with 807 pupils, including 462 boarders, and states that leaders check the additional needs of pupils who speak English as an additional language when they join.

Assessment format

Quest Assessments states that the assessment for Tonbridge's 13+ provisional examinations, Year 8 late-entry examinations and 14+ entrance examinations comprises four computer-based sections (English comprehension, verbal reasoning, mathematics and non-verbal reasoning) over 80 minutes, plus a 30-minute written English task. It notes the format is age-appropriate but is not the same test at each entry point.

What is not published

The reviewed admissions material does not publish an acceptance rate or an annual application total, so no acceptance-rate estimate can responsibly be made. Families wanting a sense of competitiveness would need to ask the school directly.

Current roll composition

At the October 2024 inspection, ISI recorded 807 pupils, including 462 boarding pupils. It also recorded 151 pupils with English as an additional language and 171 pupils identified with SEND. These are inspection facts about the roll, not descriptions of individual families.

Where pupils came from (2018 snapshot)

In September 2018, ISI reported that most day pupils lived in towns and villages near Tonbridge, that boarders predominantly lived within about 90 minutes' travel time including London, and that 80 boarders lived overseas, with 28 nationalities represented on roll. This is a historical snapshot from 2018 and should not be read as the current distribution.

Destinations and offers (school-reported)

The school states that 95% of its students went on to Russell Group and high-tariff universities worldwide in 2024. The wording reports where students went, so this is a destination figure rather than an offer or matriculation rate.

In a May 2026 school blog post, Tonbridge reports that 28 boys applying to US universities received 94 unconditional offers, including 11 offers from Ivy League colleges. These are offers, not enrolments, and one applicant can hold several offers.

The school's official history names EM Forster, Derek Barton, Colin Cowdrey, Lord Douglas of Kirtleside and Dan Stevens as former pupils.

Co-educational Sixth Form

Tonbridge announced on 9 June 2026 that it will introduce a co-educational Sixth Form from September 2028. The school states that girls will initially join as day pupils, with boarding provision planned from September 2030 as facilities are developed. This announcement comes from the school itself.

Single-sex fit constraint

The school currently serves boys aged 13–18. Its own announcement confirms the Sixth Form will become co-educational from September 2028. We read that announcement as implying the Lower School would remain boys-only, so families seeking a co-educational Year 9–11 setting should treat this as a fit constraint; this is our inference from the stated plans rather than a separate boys-only guarantee published by the school, and prospective families should confirm the position directly with admissions.

Cost to budget for

For 2026–2027, the school lists termly fees of £21,417 for boarding and £16,069 for day pupils, inclusive of VAT. It also states that extras are usually £300 to £1,500 per term and that music tuition is £523 per instrument per term, so families should budget for these optional or variable costs on top of the headline fee.

Workload and balance

ISI records that some pupils, particularly in Year 9, expressed concerns about work-life balance when commitments became overly enthusiastic. This is a practical fit question for applicants weighing the school's extensive academic and co-curricular programme. On our reading, this is best used as a fit signal for families about workload rather than as a verdict on the quality of provision; the evidence available to us is a single wellbeing observation from one inspection, and we do not have the inspectors' own characterisation of how they framed it.
