Rolling, Year-Round Process

This rolling model suits the reality of international family relocations, which rarely align neatly with a September application window.

How to Apply

Applications are submitted through the OpenApply platform, accompanied by a non-refundable application fee of €250. Once an application is submitted, the admissions team reviews documents and, for students in Grade 3 and above, schedules grade-level entry assessments. These assessments include the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) test in Mathematics and English, plus a writing sample. The MAP test is a widely used, adaptive standardised assessment that gives the school a clear picture of each applicant's academic level regardless of prior school system.

English Proficiency Requirements

Because all instruction at BFIS is in English, prospective students must demonstrate the ability to access the curriculum in that language. Students entering up to Grade 2 are assessed more lightly, given that language acquisition at young ages is rapid. From Grade 3 onwards, English proficiency is assessed more formally. Students who are still developing their English may be asked to provide additional evidence—such as a Cambridge English or Duolingo English Test certificate—before a place can be offered. EAL support is available once enrolled, but the school is clear that students must be on a trajectory toward full English-medium access.

One-Time Fees on Acceptance

Families who receive and accept an offer pay a one-time, non-refundable Entrance Fee of €6,000. A Matriculation Fee of €1,100 (for the first child) is also payable. These fees are in addition to the annual tuition, which ranges from €12,950 (Nursery–Pre-K) to €21,720 (Grades 9–12).

No Scholarships or Financial Aid

Waitlists

When a grade is full, applicants are placed on a waitlist. Priority within the waitlist is determined by the school's admissions policy (which considers factors such as sibling enrolment and the order of complete application receipt). Origins (1985–1986)

The story of BFIS begins not with a corporation or a government ministry, but with a small group of ten Barcelona families who in 1985 identified a gap in the city's educational landscape: there was no community-founded, non-profit American international school. These families organised, fundraised, and planned, and in September 1986 Benjamin Franklin International School opened its doors with 23 teachers, 150 students, and a programme spanning Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. Growth and a Permanent Campus (1990s–2001)

Academic Milestones (2011–2023)

The introduction of the IB Diploma Programme in 2011 marked a turning point in BFIS's academic identity. Previously offering a purely American curriculum, the school now gave its upper-school students access to an internationally recognised qualification, opening doors to universities across Europe and beyond. A dedicated Elementary School building followed in 2016, providing younger learners with purpose-designed learning spaces. The Secondary School building—serving Grades 6–12 and approximately 440 students—opened in 2021, completing a campus transformation that had been decades in the making. Rebranding and Future Expansion (2025–2026)

In 2025 the school undertook a rebrand, refreshing its visual identity while retaining its founding values. The next major milestone is the opening of the Centre for Innovation and Creativity in 2026, a purpose-built facility that will add robotics and engineering studios, visual arts and performance spaces (including a recording studio), an Olympic-size gymnasium, an outdoor amphitheatre, and additional outdoor courts to the campus.
