The International School of Hamburg holds the distinction of being Germany's first international school, established in 1957 in Timberlake House with just 50 students from 12 nations. From 50 to 800 Students

Over six-plus decades, ISH has grown to serve approximately 800 students aged 3–18 from more than 60 nationalities. The faculty now numbers around 114 teachers drawn from 28 countries, reflecting the school's deeply international character. Throughout this evolution, ISH has remained a non-profit independent association (e.V.), governed by and for the benefit of its community rather than any commercial interest.

Curriculum Evolution

What began as an English-language school for expatriate children has evolved into a full IB continuum school — using the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) in Early Years and Primary, the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Grades 6–10, and the IB Diploma Programme (DP) and Career-related Programme (CP) in Grades 11–12. This coherent progression from age 3 to 18 under one roof and one educational philosophy is a hallmark of modern ISH.

In 2024, ISH students sitting the IB Diploma Programme achieved:

• IB Career-related Programme (CP): 100% pass rate (versus approximately 80% globally)

Approximately 85% of ISH graduates proceed to university, with the remainder pursuing apprenticeships, foundation programmes, or gap years. Graduates have been accepted to institutions across the globe, including:

Academic Support Structure

Strong outcomes are underpinned by an extensive Student Support Services Team comprising:

A Purpose-Built Campus

The International School of Hamburg is housed on a single 41,000 sqm campus (19,000 sqm of buildings) at Hemmingstedter Weg 130 in Hamburg-Osdorf, situated in the city's green belt adjacent to the Botanical Garden. The current campus opened in 2010 and was significantly expanded in 2015, giving the school a modern, well-resourced environment that supports the full range of IB learning.

Access

The campus is well connected: S-Bahn lines S1/S11 stop at Klein Flottbek station, a 5–10 minute walk away, and HVV bus #283 stops directly at the campus. The school also runs two dedicated school bus routes for students in the outer Hamburg suburbs. Hamburg Airport is approximately 30 minutes away by taxi or via the S1 train.
