In 1946, post-war Kuala Lumpur had no British-style school. Alice Fairfield-Smith, a biologist with Harvard connections, solved this problem simply: she began teaching her daughter at home. Word spread, more children joined, and a school was born. When Alice Smith departed for England in 1950, she left behind one firm instruction — "We do not want to make a profit" — and a group of determined parents who formed an association to carry on her work.

That non-profit ethos has never changed. The Alice Smith School remains one of the few international schools in Malaysia governed as a parent-run, not-for-profit association, a structure that keeps mission at the centre and commercial pressures at the periphery.

Growth and Expansion

From its humble origins in a private home, the school expanded steadily through the mid-twentieth century, eventually establishing its primary campus at 2 Jalan Bellamy in central Kuala Lumpur — a prestigious address in the diplomatic quarter near the national parliament. As demand grew with Malaysia's growing expatriate community, a purpose-built secondary campus was developed in Taman Equine, Seri Kembangan, Selangor, opening in 1997. The campus was inaugurated in 1998 by Prince Edward, Duke of York, reflecting the school's strong ties with the British establishment.

The most recent major addition was the Jubilee Centre at the primary campus, completed around 2015. This award-winning building — recipient of the Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) Gold Award — houses student dining facilities, parent waiting areas, and community spaces, symbolising the school's investment in community life alongside academic infrastructure.

Accreditation Milestones

In 2011 and again in 2014, the school achieved British Schools Overseas (BSO) certification from the UK Department for Education — a rigorous independent inspection that confirms the quality of British education delivered abroad. The school is also an accredited member of COBIS (Council of British International Schools), CIS (Council of International Schools), ISC (Independent Schools Council), EARCOS (East Asia Regional Council of Schools), and a founding member of FOBISIA (Federation of British International Schools in Asia).

In 2023, 82% of UK university applicants were accepted at their first-choice institution, rising to 88% across all international destinations. Subject Breadth

With 25 A-Level subjects and a wide IGCSE offering — including English, Mathematics, the three sciences, History, Geography, Economics, Psychology, Business Studies, Art, Music, PE, and modern languages (French, Mandarin, Spanish, Bahasa Malaysia) — students have genuine choice without the constraints of a smaller curriculum. The school does not offer the IB Diploma, reflecting a deliberate commitment to the depth of the British examination tradition.

Primary Campus — Jalan Bellamy, Kuala Lumpur

The primary campus sits at 2 Jalan Bellamy, 50460 Kuala Lumpur — in the heart of the diplomatic and government quarter of the capital, a short drive from Perdana Lake Gardens and the national parliament. The campus serves students from Nursery through Year 6 (ages approximately 3–11).

Despite its urban setting, the primary campus offers a rich physical environment:

The secondary campus at 3 Jalan Equine, Taman Equine, 43300 Seri Kembangan, Selangor opened in 1997 and serves students from Year 7 through Year 13 (ages approximately 11–18). Officially inaugurated by Prince Edward, Duke of York in 1998, it was purpose-built with space and sporting infrastructure that a central KL location could not have provided.

Getting There

A school bus service covers both campuses, running routes across KL and the surrounding suburbs. The two campuses are approximately 20 minutes apart by car. Neither campus is served by a nearby MRT or LRT station, making the school bus or private car the primary modes of transport for most students.

A Non-Selective School with Real Competition

Alice Smith School's admissions policy is explicitly non-selective — the school does not rank applicants academically and does not admit only the highest-achieving students. However, 'non-selective' does not mean 'open'. Each year group has a defined capacity, and when that capacity is reached, qualified applicants are placed on a waiting list. In practice, entry to popular year groups — particularly Reception (4-year-olds) and Year 7 (secondary entry) — can involve meaningful waiting times.

The Good Schools Guide notes that places in Years 11 and 13 are particularly limited, given the examination-year pressures.

The Application Process

Step 1 — Association Membership: Families must first join the Alice Smith Schools Association (ASSA) and pay a membership fee before formally applying. This structure reflects the school's non-profit, community-association governance.

Step 2 — Application Fee: A non-refundable application fee of RM 1,500 is paid at the point of application submission.

Step 3 — Assessment: All applicants undergo age-appropriate evaluation:

• Foundation Stage to Year 1: Observation-based assessment and informal interview; very young children may simply be observed during a visit.
• Years 2–6: Online tests in English, Mathematics, and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
• Years 7 and above: English, Mathematics, and Non-Verbal Reasoning tests, plus a short English written composition. Students entering Year 12 may be assessed on A-Level readiness, including AS-level performance.
• EAL note: Students whose first language is not English meet with the EAL coordinator as part of the assessment to determine the level of support required.

Step 4 — Parent interview/information session: Parents typically attend an information session rather than a formal interview, consistent with the school's welcoming, non-intimidating approach.

Step 5 — Offer and Enrolment: Successful applicants receive an offer and confirm their place by paying the non-refundable Enrolment Fee of RM 20,000 plus a refundable deposit of RM 15,000 (Early Years) or RM 24,000 (Years 1–13).

What Families Should Know

• The school does not publish an acceptance rate, but demand consistently exceeds supply at popular entry points.
• There is no requirement for prior British curriculum experience — students transitioning from other international curricula are considered.
• At least a working knowledge of English is expected; students with very limited English may find integration difficult given the volume of EAL support available is described as 'limited'.
• A sibling discount of 6% (third child) and 10% (fourth child onwards) provides financial relief for larger families.
• Annual tuition ranges from RM 53,730 (Pre-school, normal day) to RM 122,370 (Years 10–13), placing it among the higher-fee international schools in Kuala Lumpur.
